NARAL Pro-Choice America company history timeline

1969

The committee held its first official meeting in New York on February 25, 1969.

The Board of Directors, elected by the membership, officially replaced the Planning Committee at the first Board meeting, held on September 27, 1969.

1970

Only one year after NARAL's formation, the New York state legislature voted to legalize abortion, and the new law went into effect on July 1, 1970.

1973

To reflect the Court's repeal of restrictive laws, NARAL became the National Abortion Rights Action League in late 1973.

1977

NARAL Pro-Choice America Foundation was established in 1977 to provide a policy and educational component to the work of our sister organization, NARAL Pro-Choice America.

1980

After the 1980 elections resulted in an anti-choice president and the loss of pro-choice senators, NARAL increases its grassroots organizing and targeting in an effort to block anti-choice legislation and the ratification of a so-called "human rights constitutional amendment."

1991

In 1991 the NARAL Foundation unveiled a new campaign to take some of the focus off abortion and emphasize the necessity of keeping available a full range of reproductive health services.

1992

NARAL helps organize the Women’s Rights rally on October 7, 1995 in New York City to protest the arrival of anti-choice Pope John Paul II.

2003

The organization once again changed its name in 2003, becoming NARAL Pro-Choice America.

2007

In 2007 the Court also upheld a federal ban on a rarely used abortion method known as intact dilation and evacuation.

2013

Nancy Keenan, formerly the Montana Superintendent of Schools, became President of NARAL, and served until February 2013.

2021

In November 2021, NARAL announced the hire of their current president, Mini Timmaraju, who is the first woman of color to lead the organization.

2022

Jackson Women’s Health Organization (2022), the Court overturned both Roe and Casey, holding that there is no constitutional right to abortion.
