Nashville Symphony company history timeline

1946

Led by music director Giancarlo Guerrero, the Nashville Symphony has been an integral part of the Music City sound since 1946.

1951

1951: New music director.

1980

The concert was at War Memorial Auditorium, which would be the symphony’s home until 1980 when it moved to the Tennessee Performing Arts Center.

1985

1985: First Symphony Ball.

The annual ball, one of the few white-tie galas in the country, began in 1985 to help fund the symphony’s artistic and educational missions.

1993

1993: Partnership with Amy Grant.

1997

The symphony first appears on national television in 1997 as part of “Liberty! The American Revolution,” a PBS miniseries and American history teaching video.

In 1997, she launched a 19-city United States tour with the symphony, and the proceeds paid off the organization’s bankruptcy debt.

1998

The Nashville Symphony began recording with Naxos during the 1998-‘99 season and remains one of the most prolific recording orchestras in the United States, with more than 30 releases.

2000

The orchestra's profile increased during his tenure through recordings, television broadcasts and an East Coast tour, which culminated in a performance at Carnegie Hall on September 25, 2000.

2003

3, 2003: Groundbreaking for Schermerhorn Symphony Center.

2006

Schermerhorn Symphony Center, the orchestra’s home since 2006, is considered one of the world’s finest acoustical venues.

2007

Under his guidance, the orchestra earned three GRAMMY® Awards for its recording of Joan Tower's Made in America in 2007 and produced an internationally syndicated radio program, American Encores.

2008

With the arrival of current Music Director Giancarlo Guerrero in 2008, the Nashville Symphony has continued its spectacular rise to prominence with an active schedule of recordings, commissions and world premieres.

2015

Released in 2015, the orchestra’s recording of Ben Folds’ Piano Concerto debuted at No.

2016

In 2016, the Nashville Symphony launched Accelerando, an initiative designed to prepare young musicians from underrepresented ethnic communities for collegiate study and professional orchestra careers.

2021

16, 2021: Reopening after COVID-19 pandemic.
