On July 15, 1935, Meadowbrook Hospital finally admitted its first patient.
The hospital expanded several times throughout the 40’s and 50’s, and celebrated its silver anniversary in 1960 with a two-story addition and the germ of an idea: to become a complete tertiary-care teaching medical center serving the needs of a population that reached one million that year.
Anthony Giustino, president of the union local, said morale had been a problem since the early 1990's, when the former Republican administration of the county ''tried to wash its hands of the hospital.'' He said morale would remain low until it is clear that the hospital has rebounded.
In early 1997, Nassau County and New York State worked to create a new public benefit corporation that would provide a more comprehensive approach to the region’s public health planning.
On September 29, 1999, the newly assembled Board of Directors held their first official meeting.
''How do you get middle-class residents to feel differently?'' asked Doctor Marilyn A. Robertson, chairwoman of the nonprofit corporation that took over the hospital in 1999. ''That's probably the hardest part.
Richard T. Celiberti, a vice president of Cap Gemini Ernst & Young, said the team of consultants that came to the hospital early in 2001 started by doing an assessment of its current financial position and a three-year forecast.
The next step in the hospital plan is to create a break-even budget in 2003 and try to keep one in the future.
Weitzman said in his letter, ''it would cause a catastrophic crisis for Nassau County.'' These payments, which are now $14 million per year, will increase to $19 million annually in 2004, when the payments begin to include reduction of the principal on the debt.
