1873

1873 activities extended into engine inspection and insurance against breakdown

1880

The American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME) was founded in 1880 in response to boiler explosions that became common with the use of steam power.

1893

In 1893 the two groups merged to form the International Brotherhood of Boilermakers and Iron Shipbuilders.

1907

After the ASME helped overcome manufacturer objections to "needless government interference" Massachusetts passed "An Act Relating to the Operation and Inspection of Steam Boilers" in 1907.

1911

The ASME Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code (B&PVC) was conceived in 1911 out of a need to protect the public.

After its founding in 1919, The National Board of Boiler and Pressure Vessel Inspectors knew it had to find an answer to the problem.

1921

Prior to 1921, a boiler manufactured in one state would not necessarily be accepted for operation in a neighboring state even if it had been constructed in accordance with the ASME code.
