John Sloan, the first chief executive brought in from outside NFIB, became President of NFIB in 1983.
In honor of National Women’s Small Business Month and the 30thAnniversary of groundbreaking legislation, H.R. 5050, also known as the Women’s Business Ownership Act of 1988, the NASE recognized the powerful role women entrepreneurs play in helping our nation’s economy grow and prosper.
In 1992, Jack Faris became President following Sloan’s death and clearly defined NFIB’s role in affecting public policy at the state and federal levels through political and grassroots activism, and lobbying lawmakers in an integrated manner.
Efforts of the NASE were instrumental in passing the Small Business Regulatory Enforcement Act of 1996, which mandates major improvements in the way federal agencies treat small businesses.
2005 – Valerie W. Perlowitz, founder and CEO of Reliable Integration Services, Inc., a leader in technology issues serving on President George W. Bush’s IT Advisory Council
2006 – Robert Schmidt, founder of Cleveland Medical Devices Inc. and Orbital Research Inc., an active voice in state and national politics on taxation and commercialization; and
2007 – Scott Hauge, president of Cal Insurance & Associates and executive director of Small Business California, a grassroots organization with significant influence in California;
2008 – Joseph Melookaran, CPA, founder of JMA Chartered in Overland Park, Kansas, a professional services firm specializing in public assurance, IT, network design and security.
In February 2009, Dan Danner became NFIB’s sixth President.

Brad Close was named President and CEO of NFIB in February 2020.
