To better integrate all the learning of the programs, Congress created the National Defense University in 1976.
NDU was established in 1976 to consolidate intellectual resources and provide joint higher education for the nation’s defense community.
In 1984 the university created the Institute for National Strategic Studies to meet the demand for military research.
Similarly, since the institute's establishment in 1984, the fellows have published hundreds of scholarly papers under the NDU Press imprint as well as other specialized journals and fellows frequently publish in the op-ed section of many papers.
In May 1990, the War College and the Command & General Staff College of Army, Navy and Air Force were respectively renamed as Strategic College, Army College, Navy College and Air Force College.
In 1993 President Bill Clinton signed into law a bill that allowed NDU to grant the degree of Master of Science in National Resource Strategy upon graduates of the Industrial College, and the Master of Science in National Security Strategy upon graduates of the National War College.
The first master’s degrees were awarded at the NDU in 1994.
The NDU helps administer the Defense Senior Leader Development Program (founded in 1997 as the Defense Leadership and Management Program) to develop leadership skills among civilians working in the defense field.
The Africa Center for Strategic Studies, the Near East South Asia Center for Strategic Studies, and the Center for the Study of Chinese Military Affairs were founded in 2000.
The Center for Technology and National Security Policy, established in 2001, studies the relationship between technological development and defense planning.
The university’s newest school is the College of International Security Affairs, which was created in 2002 as the School for National Security Executive Education.

In September 2006, in pursuing of modern armed force build-up, along with the need of organizational reformation executed by MND, National Defense Medical College was subordinate to MND, and meanwhile Political Warfare School was renamed as Political Warfare College and subordinate to NDU.
In August 2007, NDU was relocated to Shuai Zhen Campus in Bade District, Taoyuan, where it has continued to function and expanded upon the legacies and traditions from its origins and carried on the mission of cultivating outstanding officers in all facets of the military profession.
On January 1, 2012, the Language Center was subject to NDU. Furthermore, on April 1 the same year, the National Development Course was also subordinate to NDU. Both newly included are categorized as Level 1 units of NDU.
