Established by an act of Congress in 1901, the agency works closely with the United States Naval Observatory and the Bureau International des Poids et Mesures in Paris to ensure coordinated universal time.
Established in 1913, it administers the Bureau of the Census, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), the Patent and Trademark Office, and United States Travel and Tourism Administration (USTTA).
As a test of feasibility of the simplex method, in 1947 the computational group at NBS carried out the steps of the simplex method on the classic diet problem posed by the economist George Stigler.
