Juggling the demands of both family and MS, Evelyn did not hesitate when she learned in 1946 from her neurologist Doctor Colin Russel about a new MS organization a young New York City woman, Sylvia Lawry had just launched in the United States.
The fledgling National Multiple Sclerosis Society began operating in 1946, and news of its establishment spread quickly to all parts of the United States and Canada.
In November 1948, this small chapter presented the new MS Society with a $3,000 cheque for MS research.
The first installment was paid in January 1949.
In 1953, our founders Richard and Mary Cave were frustrated at the lack of treatments and support available for Mary's MS. So they decided to do something about it.
1953 - Richard Cave hosts first ever meeting in Chelsea Town Hall, London.
1954 - Association of Scottish Branches (now local groups) formed.
1956 - First branches (now local groups) formed in Wales and Northern Ireland.
1960 - BBC hosts our first TV appeal.
1964 - The 100th MS Society branch is established.
The International Federation of Multiple Sclerosis Societies, of which the Canadian Society is a charter member, was established in 1967.
1988 - The European MS Platform is launched, to lobby, raise awareness, and provide information.
2002 - MS Society Essentials series is launched, responding to topics people with MS wanted information about.
In 2008, the Multiple Sclerosis Society of Canada commemorated the 60th anniversary of its founding.
MS activists have helped secure $45 million in MS Research funding for the MS Research Program through the Department of Defense since 2009.
2011 - Launch of the first ever MS Register to measure the impact of MS.
