1834

Charles Goodyear walked in to the Roxbury India Rubber Company, the first American rubber manufacturer in 1834.

1839

In 1839, Goodyear invented vulcanized rubber, and Eduard Simon discovered polystyrene.

1845

In 1863, so the story goes, a New York billiards supplier ran a newspaper ad offering "a handsome fortune," ten thousand dollars in gold, to anyone who could come up with a suitable alternative for ivory.

The first synthetic polymer was invented in 1869 by John Wesley Hyatt, who was inspired by a New York firm’s offer of $10,000 for anyone who could provide a substitute for ivory.

1925

The word “plastic” was introduced in 1925.

1930

Polystyrene, which yielded very lightweight foams, was introduced in 1930.

And although a single celluloid comb cost one dollar in 1930, by the end of the decade one could buy a machine-molded comb of cellulose acetate for anywhere from a dime to fifty cents.

1933

Polyethylene was developed by Reginald Gibson and Eric Fawcett in 1933.

1968

In The Graduate, one of the top movies of 1968, Dustin Hoffman’s character was urged by an older acquaintance to make a career in plastics.
