NPR's first programming foray consisted of live coverage of the Senate Vietnam hearings, which first aired in April 1971.

1973

In 1973, Nixon vetoed a planned endowment to the CPB and encouraged member stations to become more autonomous, believing that local stations would naturally shift to more conservative programming.

1977

1977: NPR merges with the Association of Public Radio Stations.

1979

Her first Piano Jazz show was broadcast in April 1979.

Two weeks later NPR’s daily evening news program All Things Considered was first broadcast; in 1979 it was joined by Morning Edition.

1981

The staff of All Things Considered celebrated the 10th anniversary of the program in 1981.

1987

Ever the generous jazz advocate, McPartland also found time to write occasional articles about her favourite jazz musicians; they were collected in her 1987 book Marian McPartland’s Jazz World: All in Good Time.

1993

Some forays into new markets had already been initiated, since, in October 1993, NPR began broadcasting for six hours each day in Europe via satellite.

1994

Delano Lewis was hired as NPR's president and CEO in 1994.

1995

In 1995, a member radio station receiving all of NPR's programming paid 10.2 percent of its revenues to NPR, according to Marc Gunther of the New York Times.

1996

In 1996, NPR began 24-hour service for the Armed Forces Radio and Television Service offering programs to military radio stations abroad.

1998

In April 1998 Delano Lewis suddenly announced his intention to retire.

Lewis's successor, Kevin Klose, took over in November 1998.

1999

In July 1999 NPR reached an agreement with America Online to allow its news stories to be carried on AOL's News Channel, a popular online news source.

2010

In 2010, shortly after the program celebrated its 30th year on the air, the 92-year-old McPartland hosted her final episode.

2018

After an almost year-long NPR investigation throughout 2018 of the United States Department of Education's TEACH Grant program, the Department announces a plan to give thousands of teachers with TEACH grants incorrectly converted to loans a plan to help teachers get their grants back.
