Central Welding Supply: A History of Service Central Welding Supply was born in a very small building in Lynnwood, Washington in 1975.
In December 1986 Airgas made an initial public offering of stock, raising $5.5 million.
In September 1987 a secondary offering raised $20 million.
1987: McCausland becomes CEO of Airgas.
By January 1991 Airgas completed a total of 111 acquisitions and sales exceeded $300 million.
1992: After 120 acquisitions over ten years, Airgas approaches revenues of $400 million.
In 1992, the company updated its 7,000 sq. ft. cylinder gas and specialty gas production facility to a 30,000 sq. ft. new building adjacent to its general offices.
Already the largest producer of acetylene gas nationwide, Airgas in late 1993 began construction on an acetylene gas production facility to fulfill a $15 million contract to supply Dow Corning with the gas via pipeline to that company's Midland, Michigan, plant.
In the fiscal year ending March 31, 1996, the company reported sales of $838.1 million.
The spring 1997 acquisition of American Dry Ice increased the company's market share of liquid carbon dioxide and added dry ice to its product list.
With 600 outlets in 41 states, Canada, and Mexico, Airgas became the largest distributor of industrial, medical, and specialty gases in the United States, with sales of $1.16 billion for 1997.
Features of the web site, launched in 1998, allowed prequalified buyers to browse the catalog, place orders, and check the status of shipments and accounts.
In early 2000 Airgas signed a five-year agreement to provide safety supplies to Boeing manufacturing facilities nationwide.
In early 2002 Airgas completed its largest acquisition to date, the $236 million purchase of the United States packaged gas and welding supplies business of Air Products and Chemicals.
In early 2003 the company completed a manufacturing plant in Hopewell, Virginia, at a Honeywell facility where carbon dioxide emissions were transformed into liquid carbon dioxide.
Effective November 1, 2007 Welders Supply Company acquired the assets of Louisville Welding Supply.
The momentum continued deep into 2010, when Central opened a new location in Anacortes, WA in west Skagit County.
The summer of 2010 saw the launch of Central Welding Supply’s Safety Division.
By the end of Central’s 2010 fiscal year the company had grown to over $45M in annual revenues, in what was without a doubt the worst part of the Great Recession in the Pacific Northwest.
On September 6, 2016, Central Welding Supply announced the acquisition of United Welding Supplies Inc, located in Portland, OR. The new business represented Central Welding Supply's first location in Oregon State.
Central Welding Supply completed build out of its Wasilla retail store, warehouse, offices and cylinder storage yard in January 2017.
The new location opened February 27, 2017, supporting retail sales for walk-in customers, and also serving as a central point for distribution throughout the Mat-Su Valley.
