That was necessary in tried-and-true Rochester, as a longtime National employee said in a 1971 Times Union article.
The 1972 closing of Edwards — a longtime, massive store located across the street from the National — resulted in big problems for the downtown National. (Edwards was featured in an earlier installment of Whatever Happened To?)
“Its five-story building has been a refuge only for pigeons and bus passengers hiding from the weather,” wrote Brian Rooney in a 1979 Democrat and Chronicle story.
