Members can play, pause and resume watching as much as they want, anytime, anywhere, and can change their plans at any time.
Netflix has been changing the way people watch shows and movies and we've built a global Content Delivery Network called Open Connect which sets the standard for video delivery. We have also recently embarked on a journey to expand into cloud games, stream our content live, serve ads, and more. All this creates an exciting variety of opportunities and technical challenges.
To embrace all these challenges, we are looking to add a software engineer with expertise in analytics and modeling to the Open Connect Control Plane team to continue to craft the scalable, reliable systems needed to build and scale all our offerings.
The role involves building:

* Algorithms that smartly steer customers to Open Connect appliances such that they have the best possible Quality-of-Experience, taking into account network latencies, resource availability, and other factors.
* Algorithms and models to understand and optimize hardware utilization and cost efficiency, evaluated against intuitive and business-critical performance metrics.
* Operational knobs and tools to quickly diagnose and fix problems as they arise.
We spend our time trying to answer questions like these:
* What do we need to build in order to be a cost efficient and resilient platform?
* How do we design our models and systems to adapt appropriately to heterogeneous resource availability and demand, including in real-time?
* What's the best way to share system capacity between different games with different resolution and resource demand?
* How do we make our mathematical models and ML systems easy to operate and understand?
* What are the performance metrics we can evaluate our systems against over-time?
We are looking for someone who identifies with the following:
* You use mathematical approaches to model dynamic systems.
* You are familiar with modeling techniques and building optimization algorithms, including general ML, static, trend, and time-series.
* You build robust, responsive, and scalable systems.
* You are comfortable with ambiguity.
* You are able to iterate quickly on ideas and incorporate feedback.
* You care about building quality software that your teammates can support.
* You have a passion for operational excellence, educating others, and rigor.
* You believe that fostering an inclusive environment helps everyone do their best work.
Basic Qualifications:
* 5+ years software development or proficiency with a modern programming language
* Experience building and operating business-critical, real-time systems and models at scale.
* Behavioral modeling and analytics experience (e.g. experience with Python, Tensorflow, Spark, SQL, Presto, etc.)
Nice To Have:
* Distributed Systems Experience (e.g. Java).
* Basic background in networking concepts.

Catalog Foundation & Distribution (CFD)
Members of the Catalog Foundations & Distribution (CFD) team play a pivotal role in delivering new and emerging content to millions of members worldwide! We build the engine behind the Netflix catalog, ensuring that every title and piece of metadata reaches consumer-scale systems cohesively, quickly, and safely. Our work is crucial for enabling engaging canvases, personalized recommendations, and seamless discovery experiences that bring "moments of joy" to our subscribers. As Netflix ventures into exciting new content domains like Live, Games, and Sports, the CFD team is at the forefront, building the critical foundations that accelerate these emerging business initiatives. You'll contribute to improving the speed and stability of our existing metadata systems, ensuring a lean footprint and fast data propagation, while also enhancing our safety features to protect against critical risks. This is an incredible opportunity to work on high-impact areas, driving business velocity and collaborating with partners across Netflix to deliver frequent wins for our stakeholders. If you're passionate about building robust, scalable systems that directly power the Netflix experience, we'd love to have you!
Source Acquisition Platform (SAP)
The Source Acquisition Platform team is responsible for the applications and services touching the acquisition, management, and evaluation of assets such as video, music and effects, subtitles, dubs, and everything used to create shows and movies available on Netflix. Our suite of services is the bedrock for applications used both internally, by Netflix creative employees, and externally by our content and fulfillment partners, creative agencies, and freelancers, curating the best and largest on-demand catalog in the world. Acquisition and Evaluation of audiovisual assets is critical for our success and to provide first-class experience to Netflix members. To achieve that, we work closely with teams in data science, encoding, catalog, and content distribution to ingest, encode, store, manage, and deploy media worldwide.
Workstations Platform
The Workstations Platform team, part of the Studio Production Platforms portfolio, is responsible for delivering a scalable workstations platform. Our virtual workstations are available from both AWS and regional data centers, supporting various use cases such as Visual Effects, Animation, Editorial, and Dailies. The team is focused on an ambitious roadmap to develop a more flexible and cost-effective platform for multiple use cases.
Production Systems Engineering (PSE)
The Production Systems Engineering team is responsible for designing and delivering scalable technical solutions in support of Netflix's content creation businesses. Though technical in nature, these solutions empower our creative businesses and bring value to millions of subscribers worldwide.
Vendor & Talent Foundations Engineering
Netflix is continuing to invest heavily to produce content this year. A production's ability to successfully meet its schedule and budget targets depend in large part on the talent (actors, directors, writers, cast & crew, etc.), vendors hired and the quality of service provided. My team builds the platform, software and tools to enable Netflix Studio to discover, hire, onboard, and manage the best vendors and world-class talent to work on our productions. The tools also help with planning and resourcing workflows that result in the production and delivery of the highest quality content at scale.
Content Intelligence Engineering
Our objective in Content Intelligence Engineering is to equip the content team with the right data, insights, and decision support needed on their journey to create the best content, build the strongest slate, and drive each title to its optimal outcome - ultimately driving member value. The intention of this space has always been to establish the value of pre-launch intelligence across the title investment journey, fueling the next generation of filmmaking decisions.
Studio Orchestrator
The Studio Orchestrator Team develops and operates a robust platform designed for building media workflows and complete media business applications. This platform delivers essential development primitives and non-functional requirements, such as content security, enabling quick and easy creation of media applications. Currently, this platform is foundational to managing and transforming hundreds of petabytes of footage, integrating GenAI and other machine capabilities into content production, and powering Netflix's animation and visual effects initiatives.

Spotlight on Content Engineering Teams:
Creative Innovation
The goal for Creative Innovation is to help make better promotional assets in conjunction with our creatives. We achieve this by delivering insights for all promotional assets on Netflix. We work closely with creatives, product, design and data scientists to understand what practices would help create an effective strategy for promotion ahead of launch as well as help analyze the efficacy of the strategy once a title is launched.
Promotional Video Engineering
Promotional Video Engineering builds the products and services our creative partners use to maximize the reach of every title we launch, helping our members discover what to watch on Netflix while also driving conversation off Netflix. If you've ever watched a trailer for Netflix content on social media or seen clips play while browsing Netflix, you've experienced our impact. We enable the creation, localization, and review of clips and trailers at scale through a suite of applications that help manage millions of short videos. Some of our key technical challenges include: automated assembly of promotional videos, adapting video to different formats and aspect ratios, and managing video files and their associated metadata.
Core Catalog
The Core Catalog team creates products that advance Netflix innovation and subscriber offerings. Netflix is no longer just Movies and Shows, it also offers members Games, Live streams, and ad-tier subscriptions. These new content types require large investment in how we manage our catalog and create the systems that enable our business users around the world to set up, promote, and distribute our titles across multiple platforms.
