nettime solutions company history timeline

1996

In May 1996, a group of net.artists met in Trieste, Italy, at a conference called Net.Art Per Se.

In 1996, the company was incorporated in Scottsdale, Arizona as Vitrix Inc.

1997

Brandon (www.brandon.guggenheim.org), based on the life of Brandon Teena (the subject of the recent film Boys Don’t Cry), evolved over a year, starting in 1997.

Taking an overview of 1997, one might argue that formalism prevailed, with projects such as Desktop Is and Form Art inviting artists to create work using a defined set of objects or HTML protocols.

Time and attendance soon began generating the majority of the company’s revenue, and in 1997 the company's board decided to focus on developing time and attendance software.

1998

The move away from Web pages continued in 1998, as software, cultural terrorism, radio, and the incipient institutionalization of net.art became hot areas of investigation.

In 1998, Vitrix acquired Time America, keeping Time America's name because of the brand's recognizability to consumers.

The SaaS delivery had originally been conceived in 1998.

1999

Net.art produced a very different vibe in 1999, as net.artists were seemingly empowered by their sense of pending popularity and relevance.

2000

Because the market in 2000 was not largely familiar with SaaS, the NETtime software was sold as both hosted and on-premises versions.

2007

The business divested Time America in 2007, and nettime solutions became a private company focused on the SaaS NETtime model.

2008

In 2008, management decided to sell only the SaaS version.

2014

In 2014, nettime was acquired by Rochester, New York based payroll company, Paychex.
