Midwestern University network services technician job description

The Network Technician is responsible for the ongoing support and maintenance of the University's network infrastructure and assists with network projects as assigned. Primary responsibilities include general support of our community, changes to network configurations to support new services, and immediate response to critical issues (classroom services failures, WiFi connectivity issues, or any loss of service that affect student education and staff workflows). The proper candidate must demonstrate a knowledge of network infrastructure design, routing protocols, data security, and the ability to create detailed documentation. This is a team environment where specific manufacturer and vendor systems will be cross-trained with other members of the department to create a high level of support for our community. The position reports to the Manager of Networking Services.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities



Maintain and support wired and wireless networks, including route and switch infrastructure Track tasks using the department's project tracking system Respond frequently to urgent type calls to restore service in situations where education or workflows have stopped due to network failures Monitor network traffic, resolve issues as they arise, proactively manage the health of the network Create and maintain thorough documentation of the network environment Complete support requests that come from the Support Center based on our standard response policy Other duties as assigned

Familiarity of network diagnostics to find routing problems or failed hardware Experience in switch configurations including restore of running configurations preferred Strong skills in communication to ensure each requestor or problem is being understood with timeframes for resolution and installs.



Education and/or Experience


Bachelor degree in Computer Science, Information Technology or related field with at least 1-3 years of networking experience or Bachelor degree in other field with 3-5 years of overall IT experience with the basic understanding of networking. This role requires a basic knowledge of LAN and WAN networking protocols and devices, including switches, routers, and wireless access points. Certifications in related fields (Cisco, CompTIA, Citrix, etc.) strongly preferred. Knowledge of Microsoft Office products (including Visio) and network monitoring tools (e.g. SolarWinds) preferred.


Language Skills


Effective communication skills will be a must for this position. The candidate must be able to read, analyze, and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures and governmental regulations. The candidate will be required to write reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals. The candidate must be able to effectively present information to top management.


Reasoning Ability


This position will require a candidate with high reasoning skills. The candidate is required to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. The candidate must have the ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram or schedule form.


Mathematical Ability


This position requires intermediate mathematical skills: Ability to calculate figures and amounts such as discounts, interests, commissions and proportions, percentages, area, circumference and volume. The candidate must be able to apply concepts of basic algebra and geometry.
