Nevada Speedway LLC company history timeline

1996

Engelstad partnered with William Benette of the Sahara Hotel and opened a new $72 million superspeedway on the site in September 1996.

1998

In 1998, Las Vegas Motor Speedway was sold by Englestad and Benette to Speedway Motorsports, Inc., owned by Bruton Smith, for $215 million in December.

NASCAR Cup Series racing would make it way onto the speedway’s calendar just two years later in 1998.

2004

Kurt Busch, the 2004 NASCAR Cup Series Champion and Las Vegas native, became the first NASCAR Cup Series driver to test a stock car on the newly reconfigured track in his No.

2006

In 2006, plans were announced to reconfigure the track after the Nextel Cup Series race held in March, increasing the banking from the original 12 degrees to 20 degrees.

On August 8, 2006, the newly reconfigured track reopened to stock cars.

2011

A dark cloud hovered over the venue in October of 2011 when one of IndyCar Series’ worst ever multi-car pile-ups occurred at the IZOD IndyCar World Championships.

In 2011 Las Vegas Motor Speedway teamed up with Insomniac Events, an American music-event promoter, to host one of the largest rave festivals in the world called the Electric Daisy Carnival (EDC).

2012

A third road course designed by Romain Thievin was added in 2012.

2017

Exciting news for the Las Vegas NASCAR scene was announced in March of 2017.

In fact, in 2017, EDC won the Festival of the Year Award at the Electronic Music Awards.

2018

The race, called the South Point 400, held its inaugural race on September 16, 2018, and was won by Brad Keselowski.

Starting in 2018, A second race weekend will take place at the track, taking the New Hampshire Motor Speedway’s Cup Series and Truck Series fall weekend races.

2022

Las Vegas Motor Speedway and EDC have a ten-year contract that is set to either renew or expire in 2022.
