And in 1954 after Harold took over he radically redesigned the fitted pro baseball cap and name it the 59Fifty.
The 50 style relates to the 1954 introduction of the constructed crown to reinforce the front to keep the shape for the logo.
First debuted in 1954, the 59FIFTY is New Era’s signature model.
By 1950, New Era was the only independent cap maker supplying caps to big league baseball teams. Its impressive roster of clients included many of the 16 teams at the time like the Brooklyn Dodgers®, Cincinnati Reds®, Cleveland Indians® and Detroit Tigers®. In 1954, Harold designed New Era’s fitted 59FIFTY style cap, giving it a more contemporary look.
In 1961 they were invited to the Winter Baseball Meetings event where they were able to sell directly to the Major League and Minor League teams.
In 1972, Harold’s son, David, was named president - 14 years after he began working for the company.
In 1972 Harold was promoted to executive director and his son David Koch.
In 1974 almost all MLB teams already had their contract signed with New Era.

In 1993 New Era became the exclusive supplier of MLB caps.
Before long, retail stores were selling replicas to fans, and by 1995, the first Lids store opened in a mall in Indiana.
• In 2006 the company moved its corporate offices from Derby back to downtown Buffalo where it all started 86 years earlier.

Part of the merch for his Camp Flog Gnaw festival, Tyler, the Creator took New Era out of its comfort zone and created a custom fedora with the label in 2019.
In honor of the milestone moment, a series of special collections will drop all throughout 2020.
While there’s no official launch date, it’s tentatively scheduled for late Fall 2020.
With that, we’re partnering with the Buffalo History Museum for a special exhibit that will open late Fall 2020.
