New Era company history timeline

1920

Founded in 1920 by Ehrhardt Koch under the name E. Koch Company, the brand got its start after Ehrhardt borrowed money from his sister and a former co-worker.

1932

Our first manufacturing plant was located in a rented back room on Genesee St, Buffalo, NY until 1932

In 1932 his only son Harold joined the business.

1934

The first New Era® professional baseball cap was produced in 1934 for the Cleveland Indians’ uniforms.

1953

Koch passed away in 1953 but his ideals are still present today with the current New Era models.

1960

Fast forward slightly to the 1950s, (after the brand survived the second world war by buying up surplus fabric and hand dying it at the family home to match the colours fo the required teams) - that's a work ethic - and the 59Fifty style was born. It gained the New Era brand the attention of every MLB team in the United States, and by 1960 they had formed contracts with every single one.

1961

In 1961 they were invited to the Winter Baseball Meetings event where they were able to sell directly to the Major League and Minor League teams.

1972

In 1972, Harold’s son, David, was named president - 14 years after he began working for the company.

In 1972 Harold was promoted to executive director and his son David Koch.

1974

In 1974 almost all MLB teams already had their contract signed with New Era.

1993

In 1993 New Era became the exclusive supplier of MLB caps.

2002

After a long, courageous fight with cancer, David Koch passed away in 2002.

2006

• In 2006 the company moved its corporate offices from Derby back to downtown Buffalo where it all started 86 years earlier.
