bio: Mark Potter has worked in IT for over 25 years including 15 years in information security, governance, risk management, regulatory compliance and data protection/privacy program design and implementation. He has worked for start-ups and fortune 500 companies in multiple roles including 9 years as a CISO, 6 years as a data and data warehouse architect, and 5 years as a software developer.

Mark currently serves as the CISO for NewWave Telecom and Technologies. His responsibilities include security oversight of client federal systems and the internal corporate security program.

Mark first joined InfraGard in 2004 while working at Washington Gas, served as the Maryland InfraGard Sector Chief for the IT sector in 2013 and is a graduate/alum of the FBI Baltimore Division’s 23rd Citizens Academy and the FBI CISO Academy (6th cohort).

In 2014, Mark Co-hosted the NIST Intersection of Cloud and Mobility workshop breakout session on Privacy and Security and served as moderator for the 7th Annual ISACA Geek Week panel on Vendor/Supply Chain Risk Management.

Mark was honored to serve as an advisory board member for the Capitol Technology University Information Assurance Program from 2014-2015.

Mark enjoys the intersection of data governance, privacy, security, risk management, cloud architecture and design patterns. He is an active member of multiple security and privacy associations, working groups and standards initiatives including the NIST Cloud Computing Security Working Group, the IEEE P7002 (data privacy process) working group, ISC2, ISACA, INCOSE, ISSA, IAPP, OWASP, CSA, ACM, FITSI, CompTIA, and the SABSA Institute.

He is passionate about learning, mentoring and pushing out of one’s comfort zone.
