New York Eye company history timeline

1818

In 1818, Delafield and Rogers returned to New York City, surveyed the incidence of eye disease in the population and concluded that existing facilities were inadequate to manage the volume of indigent patients requiring ophthalmic care.

1824

An Act of the New York State Legislature officially changes the name of The New York Eye Infirmary to The New York Eye and Ear Infirmary, in formal recognition of its Otology Service, first established in 1824.

1834

In 1834, the New York Eye Infirmary relocates to its fifth home at 96 Elm Street.

1845

In 1845, the New York Eye Infirmary relocates to its seventh home at 97 Mercer Street.

1864

In 1864, the otology department was given official recognition and the name was legally changed to The New York Eye and Ear Infirmary.

1890

Although teaching had been conducted at New York Eye and Ear Infirmary from the very beginning, the School of Ophthalmology and Otolaryngology, chartered by the State Legislature, was officially founded in 1890.

1904

In 1904, NYEE’s first X-ray Department is established by Doctor Weeks with the purchase of the Infirmary’s first X-ray equipment.

1908

Doctor F. Phinzy Calhoun, NYEE resident class of 1908, returns to Atlanta to develop and lead the department of ophthalmology at Grady Hospital and Emory University for the next 30 years.

1915

NYEE's Department of Research is created by Doctor Conrad Berens, NYEE resident class of 1915.

1925

Doctor Algernon B. Reese, NYEE resident class of 1925, contributes to the field of ocular oncology, including the recognition, classification, diagnosis, and treatment of retinoblastoma, research into retrolental fibroplasia, and classifications of ocular melanomas.

1928

Eventually, he establishes the Department of Ophthalmology at Washington University in 1928.

1938

The first office was located at 1938 Grand Concourse in the Bronx.

1940

Named The Pan-American Association of Ophthalmology (PAAO), the first educational meeting was held on October 10-12, 1940 in Cleveland, Ohio, co-sponsored by the AAO&O.

1966

The NYEE Retina Diagnostic Center, incorporating retinal photography and fluorescein angiography, is established by Doctor Thomas O. Muldoon, NYEE resident class of 1966.

1971

New York Eye Surgery Associates was established in 1971 under its former name, Concourse Ophthalmology Associates.

1978

Since opening our doors in 1978, we’ve grown to provide over three million eyeglass frames each year.

2020

New York Eye and Ear Infirmary of Mount Sinai (NYEE), a national leader in ophthalmological and otolaryngological research, education and patient care, is celebrating its 200th Year Anniversary in 2020.
