The collection was moved many times in the 19th century before being housed at its current location, a building on Central Park West purposely built for the museum in 1908.
The Library boasts neoclassical architecture; soaring, 50-foot ceilings; and magnificent stained-glass windows that were gifted to New-York Historical in 1908.

In April 2020, at the height of the onset of the pandemic in New York City, photographer Renate Aller began inviting one friend at a time to join her on the sidewalk in front of her building in Soho, where she set up a camera to chronicle the coming together.
In 2021 it announced a major expansion to add space for the New-York Historical Society and the forthcoming American LGBTQ+ Museum.
