After the Great Blizzard of 1888 dumped 20.9 inches of snow on New York City, pulling down wires, plunging the city into darkness and snarling communications for days, city officials ordered that all overhead wires be buried.
The New York Wire Company building originated in 1888 as the York Wire Cloth Company, and was initially used as a space to produce wire cloth for insect screening.
1, 1889, and one of his first acts was declaring that all wires had to be removed and buried within 90 days.
York Wire Cloth was formed on East Market Street in York in 1889.
And then a buyer made it New York Wire Cloth, maker of insect wire screening, in 1892.
In 1903, Hanoverian William Kintzing invented the first loom that could successfully weave metal wire into screen.
In his history of New York Wire, Robert D. Horn said Karl Alex Smyer coaxed Christmas carols from this whistle starting in 1926.
In 1950, for example, seven wire cloth factories operated just in York County.
In a Rotary speech in 1950, New York Wire’s Robert P. Turner Jr. concluded with this summary of the company’s history: “And that’s the story … all the way from a horse’s tail to a whistle’s toot.”
In the 1990's, Hanover Wire Cloth Company was acquired by New York Wire, but has continued to operate in Hanover as a significant producer of screening, much of it now fiberglass.
