New Zealand Post company history timeline

1987

On 1 April 1987 the New Zealand Post Office was ‘corporatised’ and its core businesses split into three separate companies – Telecom, Post Bank and New Zealand Post.

1988

New Zealand Post announces a first year after tax profit of $72 million and a 25 percent cut in recurring costs (for year ending March 1988).

1989

In 1989 a Deed of Understanding between New Zealand Post and the Government was first established, setting out certain social, price and service undertakings to be met by the company.

1998

On 1 April 1998, the Postal Services Act 1998 was passed, deregulating the New Zealand postal market and opening it to full competition.

New Zealand Post wins Best Corporate Strategy Award (Management Top 200 Awards 1998) for its deregulation strategy.

2005

Repurchase of the 50 percent Express Couriers joint venture from DHL that was entered into in 2005

2010

Datam winning three Gold Awards at the 2010 Pride And Print Awards which celebrate excellence in the New Zealand printing industry.

John Allen departs after six years as Group CEO. Kiwibank CE Sam Knowles is acting CEO until Brian Roche’s appointment in early 2010.

2011

Issue of New Zealand’s first 3 D postage stamp celebrating the 2011 Rugby World Cup victory by the All Blacks, which was available in most PostShops the next business day.

2018

The cost of sending a standard letter within New Zealand will increase 20 cents from $1 to $1.20, from 1 July 2018.
