Newberg High School company history timeline

1834

Ewing Young came to Oregon in 1834, claiming as his own a vast stretch of land around his home in the Chehalem Valley.

1846

The original school was named West Chehalem School and was built in 1846.

1881

The Hoover-Minthorn House was built in 1881 by Jesse Edwards and is the first residence built and still standing in what is now Newberg, Oregon.

1888

You will find copies of the Newberg Graphic from 1888, Newberg High School yearbooks, phone and city directories, historic building inventory and an extensive clipping file along with books and other materials on site.

1911

The original high school, a three-story building that opened in 1911, is located at 714 E. Sixth Street.

1936

In 1936, the Works Progress Administration (WPA) built the second Newberg High School campus at 620 E. Sixth Street, on a lot located immediately to the west of the first campus.

1941

In 1941 the school joined the Newberg School District and was renamed Ewing Young.

1953

In 1953 the old buildings were removed and the current school was built.

1977

After the 1977 expansion, the band and choir rooms—which had been located in the lecture rooms in Buildings 2 and 3 -- were moved to other parts of the school.
