Newman’s beginnings started when Monsignor A. J. Burns founded a high school in 1915 on the St Mary’s Parish campus known initially as St Mary’s High School and then Catholic Community High School before the present name of Newman Central Catholic High School.
The Newman School was founded in 1945 by the late Doctor J. Harry Lynch and a group of colleagues, all alumni of Boston College.
In 1948, Newman accepted its first international student, a young man from Korea who was homeless.
Bishop Leo Maher, head of the recently established Diocese of Santa Rosa, February 1962, supported the idea and began the school by setting up a lay Board to plan the site and by recruiting a teaching order.
From this beginning, the school opened on September 8th, 1964 for the new 9th graders, the class of ’68, in the recently completed quad classrooms of Ursuline, while work began on the Hofer property, 32 acres next door.
Since 1985 under the leadership of J. Harry Lynch Jr., the school developed its curriculum in the liberal arts tradition embraced by John Henry Newman, using the International Baccalaureate Diploma Program as the foundation for learning.
