1887
On the evening of Friday, February 11, 1887, five businessmen met in Richmond, Virginia to consider forming a paper company.
Today s NewMarket Corporation is a far cry from its beginnings in 1887 as the Albemarle Paper Manufacturing Company.
1899
The existing structure is the third on the site and was built in 1899 by the Grand Trunk Railroad.
1950
Though the Trading Tree was removed around 1950, its significance hasn t been forgotten, and you ll still find a nod to the Trading Tree on the Newmarket Chamber logo.
1962
Under Gottwald s leadership, Albemarle Paper Manufacturing Company acquired Ethyl in 1962 in what was then the largest leveraged buy-out on record.
1975
Ethyl Corporation acquired Edwin Cooper, Inc., a supplier of oil and lubricant additives, in 1975.
1977
The Newmarket Business Association, a chartered, non-profit organization founded in 1977, is committed to.
1980
The Society was formed in the early 1980 s and members have brought back to light many aspects of Newmarket s long history which had been lost or forgotten.
1993
In 1993, it spun off its life insurance company, First Colony Life.
2004
In 2004, to maximize the potential of its operating divisions -- petroleum additives and tetraethyl lead -- Ethyl Corporation transformed into NewMarket Corporation, the parent company of Afton Chemical Corporation and Ethyl Corporation.
2016
In 2016 Newmarket Racecourses reached a very special anniversary the 350th year since the Newmarket Town Plate race was first run in October 1666.
2020
2020 is the 100th anniversary of the passage of the 19th Amendment, granting women the right to vote.
