Headquartered in New York City, Guardian US is an entirely digital operation that seeks to engage US readers by combining the Guardian's international coverage with US voices and expertise. Core coverage areas include the climate emergency, economic and racial inequality, digital privacy and much more. Guardian US launched in 2011 and today has bureaus in New York, Washington DC, New Orleans and Los Angeles. The Guardian is an independently owned, mission-driven organization, funded by readers around the globe.
It's the talent, energy and commitment our people bring to The Guardian that make us who we are. Across our business we have some of the most creative thinkers in media and beyond: award winning journalists, cutting edge commercial teams, digital talent and more.
About the role
Role: Reporter, movement building and politics
Department: Special series team
Reports to: Editor, movement building
Location: Flexible
Hybrid/Remote/In-Person: Hybrid
Terms and conditions: One-year contract, NewsMedia Guild role
Salary: $99-104k annually
The Guardian is seeking a dynamic and ambitious reporter for a new project focused on movement building and efforts to protect civil rights in the US. This project will amplify underreported and emerging stories about the people and organizations fighting for fundamental rights and liberties at this critical moment in America. From fractious town halls to protests in cities enduring immigration raids, new political voices and coalitions are emerging. We want to help readers both in the US and globally understand how these pro-democracy movements and grassroots organizing efforts are building power.
At a time when old coalitions seem to have fallen apart, we will cover new leaders and organisations making themselves heard. Areas of coverage will include immigration and civil rights, racial and economic justice, climate and environment, healthcare, the constitution and the rule of law. This is a national story, but the project will be anchored by deep local reporting.
As one of two newly created reporting roles in the movement building project, the reporter will focus on political and activist movements in the US, whether it's labor organizing, innovative policies enacted by local and state governments, new coalitions forming or who the next generation of elected officials will be. The focus should not be on one particular political party, and will highlight pathbreaking leadership that is grounded in respect for rights, justice and democracy wherever it occurs on the partisan spectrum. We welcome applicants from all parts of the US.
Key responsibilities
Work closely with editors and other departments of the Guardian US to cover political and activist movements in the US
Pitch and write a combination of breaking and longer news stories, features, analysis pieces and investigations, as required by the news cycle
Maintain a deep understanding of what's happening in political and activist movements across the US, and who the emerging leaders are
Collaborate with editors and reporters in Guardian offices in New York, Washington DC, Los Angeles, Oakland, and New Orleans
About you
Minimum of five years of experience as a reporter with a strong track record of delivering high-impact, socially focused journalism in a fast-paced news environment
Experience covering political and activist movements in the US and their leaders
Skilled writer who can pitch and write daily and long-term stories
Comfortable juggling multiple projects at once
Understanding of Guardian tone and global audience
Sophisticated understanding of the boundaries between advocacy and journalism
Excellent knowledge of national news and current affairs
Highly collaborative team player
