The Communications team works with partners across Advancement and the University to create fundraising and engagement materials for University of Chicago alumni, parents and friends. Within Communications, the Publications team produces several print periodicals, e-newsletters, and other written communications including the flagship University of Chicago Magazine, a quarterly publication now in its 118th consecutive volume.
Job Summary
The Alumni News Editor is a member of the University of Chicago Magazine editorial staff with responsibility for the Peer Review section, the volunteer class correspondents, and telephone, email, and mail queries to the Magazine. This position reports to the senior associate editor of the University of Chicago Magazine. This role provides professional support and solves straightforward problems in large scale editorial and/or publishing projects. With guidance from others, collaborates with authors to coordinate manuscript elements supplied by many departments, using existing procedures to solve problems that may arise.
Responsibilities
Produces the Peer Review section of the University of Chicago Magazine, which includes personal and professional news submitted by alumni, as well as content produced by Magazine editorial staff.
Works closely with a team of 70-plus alumni volunteers who serve as the Magazine's College class correspondents. Sets deadlines for these partners and edits the columns they submit, about 20 printed pages per issue, for consistency with Magazine style, correct usage, and appropriateness. Works with the fact-checker to ensure accuracy of all materials.
Writes Peer Review Opener (section introduction), Notes (brief items about alumni in the news), Releases (a roundup of alumni books, films, and recordings), alumni and faculty obituaries, and other copy as assigned.
Finds appropriate art for the Peer Review section, identifying archival photos pertinent to different class years to publish as sidebars. Researches and writes captions for these images.
Using InDesign and working with a designer as needed, lays out the Peer Review section, making adjustments as necessary to fit the space. Enters final corrections into the layout and uploads completed files to the printer.
Participates in the Magazine's story and issue planning meetings, contributing story ideas. Participates in editing Magazine content.
Monitors the Magazine's main email account and responds to a high volume of telephone, email, and mail requests, in consultation with the editor, senior associate editor, and managing editor of the Magazine. Coordinates campus distribution of finished issues to contributors, advertisers, and campus partners. Assists editors throughout ARD Communications with other projects as assigned, including web stories and social media, donor proposals, and stories for other department publications.
Keeps up with stories and trends in academia through regular reading of newspapers, professional publications and scholarly journals, academic reviews, and other alumni publications. Keeps familiar with current issues at the University by reading student and department publications.
Seeks opportunities for professional development that will enhance job performance including attending webinars, seminars, building networks within the University and with colleagues at peer institutions.
Edits books, journals, or other written materials with some guidance from others. Establishes editing schedules.

What You'll Do:
The hired individual will oversee the newsroom during the course of a daypart and will be responsible for creating rundowns, selecting sound to air during newscasts, writing and approving copy, and coordinating with the digital content team.
Writers work off an assigned lineup drawing information from resource copy, the audio file, and appropriate network sources. Since there is little opportunity for detailed review of copy before airing, writers must "get it right the first time" and be able to work effectively under pressure.
Editor: must review incoming news stories from a variety of sources and choose the stories of highest interest and most relevance to the WBBM Newsradio audience.
Assembles an hourly lineup of news for writers and anchors to prepare.

ORGANIZATIONAL UNIT
The General Secretariat directs administrative, human and financial resources and activities of the Union, including the implementation of the provisions of the administrative regulations on operational questions, the dissemination of information on telecommunication/ICT matters for operational and other purposes, and the provision of legal advice to the whole of the Union. The General Secretariat coordinates the implementation of the Strategic Plan, monitors the telecommunication/ICT environment and recommends as needed action relating to the Union's future policies and strategy. ORGANIZATIONAL CONTEXT
Within the Emerging Technologies Division of the Strategic Planning and Membership Department, and under the supervision of the Senior Speechwriter and Advisor, the incumbent will support the crafting of high-impact communications materials for the ITU Secretary-General.
This role requires a solid understanding of digital policy, international affairs, and technological innovation, as well as a demonstrated ability to interpret ITU's strategic priorities, technical work and other complex materials into clear, contextually relevant language that is accessible to target audiences and accurately reflects ITU's position.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Content production: Support the development of compelling and informative communications products for ITU leadership, including but not limited to speeches, talking points, op-ed articles, video messages, and press statements. Ensure that all outputs effectively communicate ITU's mission and strategic goals while being tailored to diverse global audiences.
Workflow management: Use project management software to ensure timely and high-quality delivery across all stages of the speechwriting process, from logging initial requests to seeking requisite approvals. Manage document versions and feedback cycles, ensuring collaborative input and alignment with strategic messaging.
Track editing and revision stages through comment resolution workflows, ensuring collaborators adhere to established turnaround times. Oversee the approval process, ensuring the final product is reviewed, validated by leadership, and systematically archived for future reference.
Coordination and outreach: Coordinate with internal subject matter experts to gather key inputs, background materials, and updated information for each speaking engagement, working closely with ITU communications, policy, and technical teams across the Bureaux to integrate institutional knowledge and technical accuracy ensuring that outputs are persuasive, politically sound and factually accurate and that messaging is coordinated on issues of shared interest. Collaborate with colleagues in SPM, the Executive Office and across ITU, to maximize the impact of speeches and other communication materials and to ensure their timely delivery.
Research, analysis and fact-checking: Conduct in-depth research on digital and emerging technologies and their implications for global technology policy. Stay abreast of the latest trends and developments in telecommunications and digital technologies to inform speeches and communication materials. Perform fact-checking on inputs and
independently verify all claims, statistics, and quotations through reliable sources to uphold the credibility and integrity of the final product. Synthesize key insights to inform the Secretary-General's public remarks.

QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED
Education:
Advanced university degree in political science, law, communications, journalism, technology policy or a related field OR education in a reputed college of advanced education with a diploma of equivalent standard to that of an advanced university degree in one of the fields above. For internal candidates, a first university degree in one of the fields above in combination with seven (7) years of qualifying experience may be accepted in lieu of an advanced university degree for promotion or rotation purposes.
Experience:
A minimum of five (5) years of progressively responsible experience in communications, speechwriting or journalism, including at least two (2) at the international level is required. A doctorate in a related field can be considered as a substitute for two years of work experience. Proven experience in writing on technology issues is desirable.
Languages:
Knowledge of one of the six official languages of the Union (Arabic, Chinese, English, French, Russian, Spanish) at advanced level and knowledge of a second official language at intermediate level. Knowledge of a third official language would be an advantage.

The Opportunity
The Immigration Reporter is an integral part of the News desk and the Race, Class & Communities team, working in collaboration with other reporters covering the immigration beat. The reporter will write and report a mix of daily, feature and enterprise stories examining immigration policy, enforcement and Chicago's diverse immigrant communities.
