Newton Manufacturing company history timeline

1846

In May of 1846, Thomas Anderson located the county seat of Jasper County, Iowa.

On August 17, 1846, the sale of lots began.

1854

When that factory was destroyed by fire in 1854, Levi Newton, its owner, brought his family to Batavia.

1863

The first independent school district was established in the spring of 1863.

1864

On May 25, 1864, the school board contracted for two schoolhouses to be built at a huge cost of $1,480.

1886

William Snooks opened a mine near Newton in 1886.

1887

By 1887, it was one of the largest wagon factories in the United States, making 5,000 farm wagons a year.

1916

The Newton family sold their business in 1916.

1931

In 1931, it became the Batavia Body Company, which made refrigerated truck bodies.
