Staff Data Scientist
Nexhealth 4.1
Nexhealth job in San Francisco, CA
Our healthcare system remains frustratingly analog. When you live in a world of one-tap car rides, instant meal delivery, and unlimited streaming, why do you still have to call to schedule a doctor's appointment and fill out a clipboard in the waiting room?
NexHealth's mission is to accelerate innovation in healthcare by connecting patients, providers, and developers. We're building the infrastructure layer for modern healthcare, connecting thousands of fragmented, on-premise, and closed EHR systems into a single, modern platform that powers software, APIs, payments, and patient experiences across the ecosystem.
Founded: 2017
Headquarters: San Francisco, CA
Funding: $177M Series C
Employees: 200+
Trusted by tens of thousands of providers and hundreds of health-tech developers - forging the infrastructure layer that modern healthcare needs
About the Role
We're looking for a Staff Data Scientist who wants to build. You will design NexHealth's financial data foundation from the ground up: the pipelines, models, and dashboards that power revenue reporting, forecasting, and decision-making across the company. This is a zero-to-one role where you will move fast, ship scalable systems, and apply first-principles thinking to every modeling decision. If you love combining engineering with analytical depth, this is your canvas.
What You'll Do
7+ years of experience in data science, analytics engineering, or equivalent quantitative roles within SaaS or technology companies.
3+ years building or maintaining financial data systems using Snowflake, dbt, and a BI tool such as Sigma, Looker, or Tableau.
Demonstrated experience modeling SaaS metrics (ARR, churn, CAC payback, retention, LTV) using SQL and a programming language such as Python or R.
Experience designing and automating data pipelines using APIs from Stripe, Chargebee, Salesforce, or similar platforms.
Hands-on experience implementing data quality testing, CI/CD, and version control practices for analytics.
Proven ability to translate quantitative insights into actionable recommendations for executive or product leadership.
Bachelor's degree (or higher) in Computer Science, Data Science, Statistics, Mathematics, or a related technical field.
A builder mindset: excited by blank slates, scaling impact through automation, and simplifying complexity through systems.
What You'll Bring
At least seven years of experience in data science or analytics engineering at a high-growth SaaS company, ideally where you built foundational systems
Strong skills with modern data stacks such as Snowflake, DBT, and Sigma (or similar BI tools)
Deep understanding of SaaS financial metrics such as ARR, churn, retention, lifetime value, and CAC payback, and how to model them in SQL and code
Experience designing automated data pipelines and forecasting systems using APIs from tools like Chargebee, Stripe, or Salesforce
Solid engineering instincts, including version control, testing, and CI/CD for analytics
Strong communication and storytelling skills that connect insights to decisions
A builder mindset: excited by blank slates, scaling impact through automation, and simplifying complexity through systems
Benefits
Full Medical, Dental, and Vision (up to 100% covered)
401K and commuter benefits
Flexible PTO
High-impact work that directly improves the healthcare experience for millions
Our Values
Solve the customer's problems, not yours
When making decisions, think from the perspective of the customer. It's easy to make decisions that make our lives simpler, but not the customers.
Do the things others are not willing to do
As a Nexer, always go after the hardest problems. Pursue things at the highest quality. Move at the fastest pace.
Take ownership
Act like a founder. Own your roles, destinies, mistakes, behavior, and our mission. The buck stops with each of us - no blaming or excuses.
Say what's on your mind, with positive intent
Be direct, proactive, transparent, and frequent in your communication.
Default trust
As a Nexer, you do not have to earn trust, trust is given to you by default. If we by default trust each other, our speed of communication, feedback, information sharing, and overall improvements will be a lot faster.
Think in first principles
We first identify the problem and then break it down to its fundamentals before diving into solutions. We constantly ask “why” to validate our assumptions.

As our Staff Data Engineer, you will own and evolve the foundational data systems that power NexHealth's analytics and unlock the next generation of customer-facing insights. This is a hands-on, high-ownership role that combines architectural influence with deep execution. We need to expand our data capabilities for scale and improve our daily operations and enable self-service. You will drive the transformation of our data infrastructure.
You will design data pipelines, refactor the warehouse architecture, and lay down the modeling foundations that enable trusted analytics across the company. With access to a rich and growing corpus of medical data, you will help NexHealth become a leader in data strategy, intelligence, and customer enablement.
This role is ideal for a Staff-level engineer who has seen and built great data platforms, is not afraid of legacy, and thrives in environments where the vision is clear, the systems are evolving, and the company is depending on data to unlock its next stage of growth.
What You'll Do
Own the Data Platform
Lead the architectural evolution of our data warehouse, modeling layer, and pipeline structure
Refactor core data models to support fast, self-serve access and shared understanding across teams
Build reliable ingestion and transformation systems that abstract over messy or fragmented inputs
Take responsibility for the structure, reliability, and extensibility of our warehouse and modeling layers
Replace brittle vendor-based pipelines with scalable, maintainable ingestion and transformation infrastructure
Build in observability, alerting, and validation to ensure the platform can scale with confidence
Drive Strategic Data Initiatives
Collaborate closely with Staff-level analysts, engineers, and data consumers to unblock their workflows and enable data insights.
Partner with software engineers to anticipate and manage upstream schema changes and database shifts
Define and enforce clear data contracts and interface boundaries
Shape how the company can eventually leverage data science, customer segmentation, and industry-wide insights
What You'll Bring
7+ years of experience in data engineering or software engineering with a focus on building scalable, well-tested systems
Advanced fluency in SQL and Python with strong instincts around modular modeling, optimization, and abstraction
Experience building on top of a modern managed data warehouse such as Snowflake, BigQuery, or Redshift
Proven history of taking ambiguous, fragmented data systems and turning them into reliable, documented, high-trust platforms
Ability to operate independently at a Staff level with a high sense of ownership
A background in strong engineering cultures or top-tier product environments where quality, velocity, and ownership coexist
Passion for clarity, simplicity, and helping teams move faster without cutting corners
Benefits
Full Medical, Dental, and Vision (up to 100% covered)
401K and commuter benefits
Flexible PTO
