Deregulation of the United States broadcast industry was taking place in the wake of the Communications Act of 1996, which struck down the existing limit of 12 television stations one company could own, and many firms soon began to buy clusters of them.
1996: Perry Sook forms Nexstar Broadcasting Group, begins buying TV stations.
In 2000 the firm purchased KMID of Midland/Odessa, Texas, for $10 million and KTAL of Shreveport, Louisiana, for $35 million.
In April 2002 Nexstar filed for an initial public offering of stock on the NASDAQ, hoping to raise more than $130 million.
2003: Company's initial public offering (IPO) raises $140 million.
In January 2004 the pending sale of an additional Quorum station fell through, and it was added to the Nexstar acquisition.

The Company’s continued execution led to the 2016 purchase of 71 television stations and the digital media properties of Media General, which made Nexstar one of the country’s leading local media companies.
Upon completion of its acquisition of Tribune Media in 2019, Nexstar became the largest local television broadcast and digital media company in the nation with a portfolio of 200 broadcast stations in 116 markets reaching more than 68% of United States television households.
