NHS Management, LLC company history timeline

1982

In 1982, the area tier of NHS management is abolished, resulting in 192 district health authorities (DHAs) that are responsible to the regional health authorities.

However, in 1982 Thatcher would state the NHS was “safe in our hands”, with the Conservative government deciding this was one public sector which needn’t be touched, owing to its continued success.

1990

Community Care Act (1990) – health authorities were given the power to manage their own budgets – becoming NHS trusts

1992

1994

The year 1994 then sees the introduction of provider performance tables based on these targets.

Organ Donor Register introduced (1994) – a new system is put in place, allowing the organs of people who have died (and registered to this scheme) to be used again for transplants

1998

Department of Health (1998) A first class service: Quality in the new NHS

2000

Project 2000 represented a major shift from an apprenticeship style of nurse training, in which a student nurse was a hospital employee, to a system where student nurses were supernumerary, spending part of their time in higher education, and part on clinical placement.

2002

Published in April 2002, his report suggests that future funding needs will depend on the extent to which future demand for health care is reduced by good public health policies and by disease prevention.

2004

2005

The first of a series of attempts to measure and publicise the quality of care delivered by hospitals, the hospital star rating system is modified each year and ends up being scrapped in 2005.

2006

HM Government (March 2006) Changes to Primary Care Trusts: Government response to the Health Committee’s report on changes to Primary Care Trusts.

The document instructs PCTs to “make arrangements for 100 per cent coverage of practice-based commissioning by no later than the end of 2006”, although individual practices are given some flexibility to take on commissioning to a greater or lesser extent depending on their wishes and capabilities.

2007

NHS health choice information website launched (2007) – Intended to make people more aware of health issues from their homes, without needing to call a practice or centre

2009

Care Quality Commission (2009) – Set up to regulate mental health and adult social care in the UK

2010

However, the debate is to continue with the creation of the Commission on Funding of Care and Support in July 2010.

The NHS Plan outlines a strategy for more doctors, more nurses, more beds and 100 hospital building schemes by 2010, with improved access to hospitals and primary care and a renewed focus – through performance targets – on decreasing waiting times.

2012

The White Paper paves the way for the 2012 Health and Social Care legislation.

2013

The primary advancement to the core system of the NHS in this decade has come in the form of a 2013 reform known as “the new NHS”.

2013 was the first time a liver was taken from a body, kept alive, and then transported into another working body.

2015

The Mandate will determine the criteria on which the NHS Commissioning Board (NHSCB) will be held to account for its performance up to 2015.

2016

After two years of abortive contract negotiations, in January and February 2016, junior doctors took strike action for the first time in forty years.

Conservative manifesto pledges for health include a focus on further implementing NHS England’s Five Year Forward View, seven-day access to a GP, 5,000 more GPs and a pledge of at least £8bn a year in additional funding for the NHS by 2020.
