NIO company history timeline

2014

NIO is an electric Chinese car maker that was founded by William Li, aka Li Bin, in 2014.

2015

Li Auto: Li Auto is a Chinese smart electric vehicle maker that Li Xiang founded in 2015.

2016

NIO developed its first model, the EP9 supercar, in 2016.

2017

In November 2017, it opened its first NIO House in Shanghai (more on that later), followed by its first production car’s unveiling the next month.

2018

In September 2018, Li Bin was in New York to ring the famous bell, and NIO collects over a billion dollars from its public offering.

So far, so good, and deliveries start in the summer of 2018, followed by favorable reviews in several Chinese car magazines.

2019

NIO’s investigation ultimately leads to a faulty plug jacket that can cause a short circuit, and in early 2019 all cars the company has produced need to be recalled for repairs.

Halfway through 2019, NIO started delivering its second model, the ES6.

2020

In April 2020, the company announced a $1 billion funding from a bunch of new Chinese investors, which the company badly needed due to its struggles at selling its cars.

2020 will go down in history as a dramatic year for obvious reasons, but one of the more bewildering stories of the year is Tesla’s stock price.

2022

According to reports, Rivian intends to start manufacturing its RIS SUV and RIT pickup in 2022.
