NJ Transit company history timeline

1981

Between 1981-85, the services of several other bus companies were incorporated into NJ TRANSIT Bus Operations, Inc.

1983

On January 1, 1983, a second subsidiary, NJ TRANSIT Rail Operations, Inc. was launched to assume operations of commuter rail in the State after Congress ordered Consolidated Rail Corporation (Conrail) to cease its passenger operations.

1984

A third subsidiary, NJ TRANSIT Mercer, Inc., was established in 1984 when the agency assumed operation of bus service in the Trenton/Mercer County area.

1989

Ferry service at a temporary facility was reintroduced in 1989, but the current project will restore service at the original ferry slips.

2003

In early 2003, NJ TRANSIT and the Port Authority entered into an agreement to allow for the rehabilitation of the Hoboken Terminal ferry slips and supporting infrastructure, ultimately to restore permanent ferry service to the historic building and create a new ferry waiting area for customers.

2005

Work on the second phase, which is nearing completion and included construction of the clock tower replica, began in December 2005.

2010

The overall project is expected to be completed in 2010.

2011

A fourth subsidiary, NJ TRANSIT Morris, Inc., was established in 2011 when the agency assumed operation of the local bus service in Morris County.

2018

NJ TRANSIT President & CEO Kevin S. Corbett was appointed to lead the agency on February 14, 2018.
