Summary:
The Laboratory for Educational Neuroscience at American University in Washington DC, directed by Dr. Emily Grossnickle Peterson, is accepting applications for a full-time, benefits-eligible Research Assistant position, to assist with an NSF-funded project investigating adolescent curiosity and visual processing (NSF award #2239591). The Research Assistant will support project management and data collection using methods including eye-tracking, surveys, online studies, and citizen science approaches. Essential Functions:
1.) General Study Support
* The Research Assistant will assist with project management including: maintaining and organizing general lab and experimental procedures; maintaining lab schedules; monitoring materials and supplies; updating computers and technology. The Research Assistant will develop and monitor IRB protocols for approval or modification. The Research Assistant will onboard and supervise undergraduate research assistants. The Research Assistant may also be involved in creating and validating stimuli, surveys, or paradigms as needed.
2.) Data Management and Processing
* The Research Assistant will conduct data entry, data pre-processing, transcript coding, and data management, in adherence with study protocols. The research assistant will maintain the study database, including organization and documentation of files, and will assist with preparing open-access versions of datasets. Catalog/Curriculum
* Manages the catalog process for all undergraduate-level curriculum changes, departmental and main catalog pages, and faculty lists;
* Assists departmental representatives with the curriculum submission process. Reviews and updates narrative portions of the Catalog; and
* Summarizes changes for announcement at Undergraduate Council.
Other Duties
* Supports recruiting, orientation, and advising efforts within the Office of Undergraduate Studies as needed;

The Graduate Writing Tutor serves as the face of the Writing Center. They are primarily responsible for providing individual support for student writing in classes across the curriculum. Summary:
The Complex Problems (CP) Program Leader (PL) is an undergraduate part-time student staff member of Complex Problems. The PL fulfills a vital role, mentoring new AU students by helping them to integrate learning experiences gained from both inside and outside of the CP seminar. The PL builds community within the CP seminar by providing academic and social guidance and serving as a liaison between faculty and students.
The PL reports to the Complex Problems Staff and is expected to work closely with the faculty member to support the students in their seminar. PLs additionally meet with a Senior PL and a small group of peers throughout the semester. Emphasis is placed on the PL as a responsible leader and colleague, representing Complex Problems as part of the total campus community.

Position Type/Expected Hours of Work:

Required Education and Experience:

* PLs are expected to prioritize their own academic work and progress; as such, PLs should aspire to maintain their typical academic performance or a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.75 while serving in this role.

Throughout the semester, the Complex Problems staff will work to recognize and celebrate PL achievements.
4.) Time Commitment
* The Complex Problems program understands the PL role to be one part of the PL's multi-faceted life at American University. The PL position requires regularly scheduled responsibilities and unscheduled responsibilities, and times at which PLs are available and accessible to students. A reasonable work schedule would include both types of time, including regularly scheduled responsibilities (CP seminars, staff meetings, etc.), and availability time at varying intervals during the day and night (one-on-one meetings with students, programming, etc.).
5.) Learning Outcomes
* Build and employ knowledge of campus involvement and local opportunities, campus partnerships, and institutional resources.
* Learn the components of serving as an academic and social guide and role model for new AU students.

* This is a one-semester appointed position where reappointment is subject to a reapplication process, satisfactory job performance evaluations, and position availability.

* PLs must be mindful of time management related to outside commitments. These commitments include other student leadership/organization positions, second jobs, internships, etc. PLs with outside commitments of over 16 hours/week must meet with a staff member to determine a time management plan. PLs must inform the CP staff of other positions held on campus (Orientation Leader, Resident Assistant, AU Ambassador, etc).
* If job performance is compromised because of any outside commitment, the PL may be given a recommendation from their supervisor to limit or cease outside activities to improve job performance. Continued poor performance may result in employment probation or termination.
* CP professional staff members are committed to the growth and development of the student staff members. They work closely with student staff members to provide a thorough understanding of the expectations of the PL role. The following consequences may apply should the PL's job performance fall below minimum standards. All cases will be handled with fairness and objectivity, and PL's should be honest with program staff about any issues that arise.

Directs applications of scientifically proven performance enhancement initiatives in the areas of strength power, speed, agility, flexibility, conditioning, injury prevention and nutrition;
Collaborates with leadership within various athletic departments and academic units;
Hires and trains members of the strength and conditioning staff, assign staff members to workout equipment safety techniques and emergency protocol to be utilized in the weight room, and meet with staff members regularly to exchange necessary information.;
Provides oversight of the department, make staff selections, conduct evaluations for staff, and make recommendations regarding personnel matters;
Regularly meets with the strength and conditioning staff to discuss goals, aspirations, and relevant topics as necessary;
Directly responsible for the retention, training, and development of staff;
Direct Supervisory Responsibility:
Assistant Strength and Conditioning Coaches;
Assistant Strength and Conditioning Staff (wage);
Strength and Conditioning Interns -Wage staff;
Formulates and oversees the annual budget for Strength and Conditioning; and
Performs other duties as assigned by supervisor or Athletic Director.
Required Qualifications:
Master's degree in related field from an accredited college/university, or equivalent combination of education and experience.;
Substantial experience in collegiate strength and conditioning coaching;
Must be available to work a flexible schedule to include weekends, nights, and holidays;
Knowledge and understanding of Atlantic 10, and National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Rules and Regulations;
Excellent verbal, written and interpersonal communication skills;
Advanced organizational and time-management skills;
Ability to motivate and inspire players to achieve their full potential;
Ability to work flexible hours, including evenings and weekends;
Display leadership qualities with the ability to hire, schedule, train, and motivate staff;
Ability to maintain general maintenance and perform repairs to weight room equipment;
Valid Driver's License or the ability to obtain one prior to the start date. Experience using sport science technology and implementing it into training. (VO2Max, Isokinetic machine, DEXA Scan, Force Plates).

The Fraternity and Sorority Life (FSL) Graduate Student Assistant for the Center for Student Involvement reports to the Coordinator for Fraternity and Sorority Life and provides advising and leadership development in areas of recruitment, risk management, member education, leadership training, and programming for the community.
The Center for Student Involvement (CSI) is the hub for the student experience at American University. CSI facilitates leadership development, organizational advising, and programs that help foster a sense of belonging for the next generation of changemakers. Our office is home to Student Government, Student Activities Council, Student Media, Student Organizations, Fraternity & Sorority Life, and the Graduate Leadership Council.
Essential Functions:
* Serve as the co-advisor to a designated FSL governing council (e.g., IFC, NPHC, Panhellenic), providing strategic guidance and mentorship to executive officers on governance, organizational development, policy interpretation, and budget management.
* Serve as an advisor to Professional Greek Organizations, guiding them in organizational development, strategic event planning, and ensuring full compliance with all University policies and procedures.
* Coordinate the planning and execution of the Fall and Spring New Member Series educational program, including communicating requirements to chapter leadership, tracking mandatory attendance records, and holding regular office hours.
* Manage and implement the comprehensive marketing and communications strategy for the Fraternity and Sorority Life (FSL) community, overseeing content creation for all digital and print platforms to promote recruitment, signature events, and community standards.
* Assist in design and implementation of targeted leadership development curriculum and training programs for FSL chapter and council executive officers, delivered through mandatory retreats, specialized workshops, and officer transition meetings.
* Serve as an administrator for the Fraternity and Sorority Life (FSL) section of the Engage platform, ensuring compliance, event submissions, membership roster management, and required form submissions.
* Actively represent FSL interests and contribute to required weekly Center for Student Involvement (CSI) and FSL staff meetings, 1:1s with the Assistant Director, and FSL governing council meetings.
* Provide direct operational support for campus-wide Center for Student Involvement (CSI) events, including large-scale Involvement Fairs and Late Night and Weekend programming, requiring flexible evening and weekend schedules.

As a lifeguard, your primary responsibility is for the safety of any person in the pool area and using the swimming pool.
