Nomura Securities company history timeline

1989

Although Nomura was the largest and wealthiest securities firm in the world by 1989, it was still having trouble muscling into the United States domestic market and was considering acquiring an established American securities firm.

1991

Nomura chair Setsuya Tabuchi and president Yoshihisa Tabuchi resigned in disgrace in 1991.

Nomura's change in corporate culture was reflected in the fact that in 1991, for the first time in Nomura's history, branches were ranked on whether they earned enough to cover their overhead, rather than the total of their commissions.

1996

1996 Nomura Capital Management opened Australia branch office in Sydney

1997

2Asian currency crisis In 1997 (Heisei 9), the Asian currency crisis which started with the devaluation of Thailand, the trading companies underwent enormous influence due to huge investment in Southeast Asia.

2001

2001 Launched two Exchange Traded Funds (ETF), one linked to the Nikkei 225 and another to the TOPIX Index Nomura Asset Management Co., Ltd. became a wholly owned subsidiary of Nomura Holdings, Inc. in October 2001

On October 1, 2001 Nomura adopt a holding company structure and Nomura Holdings, Inc. was established.

2005

2005 Seoul representative office established

2007

InstinetIncorporated was acquired in February 2007.

2008

In October 2008, Nomura acquired most of Lehman Brothers Asian operations together with its European equities and investment banking units to make one of the world’s largest independent investment banks with Y20,300bn (£138bn) assets under management.

2009

In April 2009, the global headquarters for investment banking was moved out of Tokyo to London as part of a strategy to move the company’s focus from Japan to global markets.

2010

These words were quoted when current President Miyashita of Nomura Trading spoke to employees immediately after taking office in July, 2010.

2011

2011 Shanghai representative office opened

2014

2014 Acquired ING Securities Investment & Trust, ING's asset management unit in Taiwan in April 2014.

2015

2015 Nomura Group entered a business partnership with American Century Investments Inc. in December 2015

2017

And, Nomura Trading celebrated its 100th year in business on May 7, 2017 (Heisei 29) when it was the 2nd year of this medium-term plan.
