North Andover company history timeline

1801

1801: The incorporation of the North Parish Free School, later called Franklin Academy.

1802

1802: Schofield Mill opened, which still stands today on Sutton Street, the first textile related mill in town.

Water power provided the resource needed to establish the Scholfield Mill, located at the corner of Sutton and Main Streets, in 1802 and now occupied by the North Andover Thrift Shop.

1813

1813: Nathaniel Stevens builds textile mill.

1820

Through a Child’s Eyes: Daily Life at Johnson Cottage: Adaptable to grades 1-2 and third graders studying local history units, this four rotation program introduces students to the daily life of children in the 1820s.

1832

1832: Law requiring all households to contribute to support of established church is repealed.

1834

1834: Evangelical Church of North Andover (now Trinitarian Congregational) formed by members of North Parish.

1835

1835: Bailey Family buys Parson Barnard House.

1836

1836: Gilbert & Richardson (later, Davis & Furber Machine Company) moved to the banks of Cochiciwick Brook because the water flow was more reliable.

Steeple and foundation restoration for the North Parish Church, which served as the Town’s Meetinghouse in 1836 and houses Paul Revere cast bells.

1847

1847: Lawrence incorporated as Town.

1855

The growth of the two different communities of interest led finally to the separation of the two parishes on April 7, 1855, into two distinct townships.

1861

Since 1861, from its first commitments to Civil War veterans, their spouses and their dependents, the Commonwealth of Massachusetts has demonstrated solid concern and compassion for those men and women who have displayed sacrifice, valor, and duty when their state and nation called upon them.

1867

1867: Johnson High School and Stevens Hall erected on site of current school administration building.

1868

1868: Horse Railroad Trolley Service from Lawrence began in 1868.

1884

1884: North Andover Improvement Society is founded.

1896

1896: North water pumping station built on road behind Butcher Boy Plaza.

1912

1912: 2nd Bradstreet School opened.

1913

The North Andover Historical Society was founded in 1913 by Samuel Dale Stevens, Jr. to preserve the history and traditions of his community.

1923

The Town Hall Renovation Project enhanced the historic renovation of the building built in 1923.

1926

Brooks School, opened in 1926 and located on the shores of Lake Cochichewick, is a co-educational boarding and day school with over 340 students.

1931

1931: City of Lawrence acquires 312 acres of land for municipal airport.

1945

1945: Marion Batchelder, Librarian of the Stevens Memorial Library, submitted a plea to the town to aid returning veterans of war who were requesting vocational training, college catalogs, technical books, house plans and other material to aid their transition back into civilian life.

1946

1946: M. T. Stevens merged into J. P. Stevens, headquartered in New York City, after the death of Nathaniel Stevens, who was a major shareholder.

1955

1955: North Andover celebrates its Centennial year with a parade and whole program of town wide events.

1955: North Andover Historical Society purchased Parson Barnard House thinking it was the Bradstreet House.

1956

1956: Manufacturing began at the Western Electric Merrimack Valley Plant on Osgood Street.

1956: New Pumping Station built South end of Lake Cochichewick.

1964

1964: Sam Rockwell retires from Davis & Furber, ending 150 years of Davis Family management.

1967

1967: Interstate 495 opens increasing demand for residential housing in North Andover.

1969

1969: Construction begins on a Sentinel ABM defense site at Sharpner’s Pond Road.

1972

1972: J. P. Stevens closes Stevens Mills & Osgood Mill.

1977

1977: Greater Lawrence Sanitary District plant opens.

1980

1980: Open Space Plan updated.

1981

1981: Davis & Furber stops manufacturing and closes down.

1982

1982: Davis & Furber buildings placed on National Historic register.

1982: Tracy Castiglione was hired as North Andover’s first female police officer.

1986

Our Town Charter, enacted in 1986, provides for an Open Town Meeting – Board of Selectmen - Town Manager form of government.

1988

1988: Mazurenko Farm purchased under Chapter 61A (right of first refusal)

1994

1994: Town purchases Osgood Hill from Boston University to preserve open space and protect the watershed of Lake Cochickawick.

1996

1996: Spin off of Western Electric becomes Lucent Technologies.

1996: North Andover celebrates its 350th anniversary.

2003

At its height, the Merrimack Valley works employed over 12,000 people.2003 Lucent Technologies sells Merrimack Valley plant to Ozzy Properties.Plant has over two million square feet of space.

2006

2006: Lucent merges with Alcatel SA, based in Paris.

2007

2007: Alcatel Lucent closes Merrimack Valley works laying off the last 450 employees.
