North Carolina A&T State University company history timeline

1891

The exact day of the institution’s founding is March 9, 1891.

On March 9, 1891, the Agricultural and Mechanical College for the Colored Race was established by an act of the North Carolina General Assembly as an annex of the private Shaw University in Raleigh.

1892

The college continued to operate in Raleigh until the Board of Trustees voted, in 1892, to relocate the college to Greensboro.

1893

North Carolina A&M College opened in Greensboro in the fall of 1893.

1899

In 1899, The college conferred its first degrees to seven graduates.

1904

In 1904, the college developed a 100-acre (40 ha) farm equipped with the latest in farm machinery and labor-saving devices.

1914

The 1914 passage of the Smith-Lever Act created an educational partnership between land-grant colleges and the United States Department of Agriculture.

1915

In 1915, the North Carolina General Assembly changed the name of the college to Negro Agricultural and Technical College of North Carolina.

1931

By December 1931, female students were allowed, for the first time, to participate in the student government as members of the student council.

1945

1945 – First Lady Eleanor Roosevelt tours the campus with A&T President F.D. Bluford.

1946

In 1946, the college acquired 96 acres (39 ha) of land adjacent to the original 14-acre (5.7 ha) campus.

1951

1951 – The Aggies football team wins the HBCU National Championship.

1953

In 1953, The School of Nursing was established, with the first class graduating four years later.

1960

1960 – Ezell Blair, Jr. (Jibreel Khazan), Franklin McCain, Joseph McNeil and David Richmond, four freshman students at A&T College, initiate the Lunch Counter Sit-In demonstrations in Greensboro on February 1st.

1964

In 1964, John A. Steinhauer, a science teacher, was the first white student to earn a degree from A&T, earning the Master of Science in Education with a concentration in Chemistry.

1967

In 1967, The college was designated a Regional University by the NC General Assembly.

1968

1968 – The Aggies football team wins its second HBCU National Championship.

1969

In 1969, student protesters from the college, in addition to students of nearby James B. Dudley High School, were involved in a four-day conflict with the Greensboro Police and the National Guard in which there was one casualty.

1971

In 1971, the North Carolina General Assembly passed legislation bringing all 16 public institutions that confer bachelor's degrees into The University of North Carolina System.

1987

The university celebrated its 100th anniversary in 1987, which also saw the creation of Centennial Campus, bringing together academic, corporate, government and nonprofit leaders to partner in teaching, research and economic development.

1990

1990 – The Aggies football team wins its third HBCU National Championship.

1999

1999 – The Aggies football team wins its fourth HBCU National Championship.

2001

2001 – Doctor Carolyn W. Meyers is named the first provost of the university.

2003

In 2003, N.C. A&T announced the creation of a Joint Millennial Campus, with neighboring UNC Greensboro, with the intent to focus on regional economic development.

2009

2009 – Doctor Harold L. Martin, Sr., formerly the A&T vice chancellor for Academic Affairs and dean of the College of Engineering, is elected chancellor, becoming the first A&T alumnus to serve in the position.

2010

The following year, N.C. A&T received approval to establish a Ph.D. program in Computational Science and Engineering beginning in the fall of 2010.

2012

2012 – Michelle Obama makes history as the first First Lady of the United States to be North Carolina A&T's commencement speaker.

2014

As the plan took root, N.C. A&T began a remarkable evolution that saw it become the nation's largest HBCU in 2014, a position it has held ever since.

2015

2015 – The Aggies football team win its fifth HBCU National Championship.

2016

2016 – Former United States Secretary of State, United States Senator and First Lady Hillary Clinton is a special guest at A&T's pep rally for its homecoming game.

2016 – The 44th president of the United States, Barack Obama, sits down with ESPN's Stan Verrett at North Carolina A&T for a nationally televised conversation on sports, race and achievement.

2017

2017 – The Aggies football team wins its sixth HBCU National Championship.

2018

2020

2020 – A&T is the first UNC System institution to stand up a COVID-19 testing and vaccination clinic.

In 2020, MacKenzie Scott donated $45 million to North Carolina A&T. Her donation is the largest single gift in the university's history and the second largest ever to an HBCU.

2022

2022 – The 46th President of the United States Joe Biden speaks at the largest HBCU, touting the America Competes Act, legislation aimed at enhancing research and manufacturing.

2022 – Aggies join the CAA athletic conference
