North Dakota State University company history timeline
The following law from the 1st session of the Legislative Assembly of the State of North Dakota (1890, Chapter 160, S.F. 140) established the North Dakota Agricultural College and Agricultural Experiment Station at Fargo.
1890 - The institution was founded as North Dakota Agricultural College (NDAC) as the research land-grant institution for the state of North Dakota.
A provisional course was held on January 6, 1891, and the first regular class of students was admitted on September 8, 1891.
College Hall (Old Main), completed in 1892, was the first building and consisted of offices, classrooms, and a library to serve the four NDAC students.
Greek life has been a part of the NDSU campus since 1904 when the first social fraternity was formed offering membership to men in all fields of study.
1907 - Due to ill feelings, all athletic events between NDAC and the University of North Dakota (UND) are cancelled.
Three years later, in 1910, athletic events between NDAC and UND resumed.
North Dakota State University began its homecoming tradition in 1921.
The roots of NDSU's mascot, Thundar, can be traced back to 1922.
The band earned its “Gold Star” rating in 1924 when the band was an ROTC unit and earned its third consecutive 100 percent inspection rating.
1957 - On Thursday, June 20, 1957, a category F5 tornado ripped through Fargo's campus.
NDAC continued to grow and was renamed North Dakota State University on November 8, 1960 after a statewide referendum.
Festival Concert Hall – An acoustically tuned 1000-seat hall, opened in 1981.
The Research and Technology Park also houses the Fargo branch of the North Dakota State College of Science (NDSCS-Fargo), which opened in 1997.
2004 - In August 2004, NDSU expanded its campus to downtown Fargo.
The project started in 2004 with the purchase and renovation of the former Northern School Supply building, located at NP Avenue and 8th Street North in the city’s downtown.
In 2006, the NDSU Development Foundation purchased the Pioneer Mutual Life Insurance Building and Lincoln Mutual Life & Casualty Insurance Building along 2nd Avenue North between 8th and 10th Streets, also in downtown Fargo.
The Technology Incubator opened in March 2007.
The football team left the Great West Football Conference and joined the Missouri Valley Football Conference on March 7, 2007.
The Bison Information Network, founded in 2008, is a student-run TV station.
Richard H. Barry Hall held its first classes in fall 2008 and Klai Hall was dedicated on Oct.
Construction for the Shelly Ellig Indoor Track and Field Facility started in October 2011.
In 2011, the then 14 fraternities and sororities at NDSU raised nearly $50,000 and served over 15,000 hours to local and national charities.
NDSU’s total research expenditures were $135.5 million for fiscal year 2012, the most recent year available in the national research survey.
In January 2015, NDSU defeated Illinois State to win its 4th consecutive national championship in FCS football.
