North Greenville University company history timeline

1892

NGU was founded in 1892 and named North Greenville High School, the first high school in the northern portion of Greenville County.

1915

The school received a state charter in 1904. It was taken over by the Southern Baptist Convention's Home Mission Board a year later, and renamed North Greenville Baptist Academy in 1915.

1929

The North Greenville Baptist Association reassumed control of the school in 1929.

1934

In 1934, the academy was expanded to include a junior college.

1949

In 1949, it was transferred to the South Carolina Baptist Convention, which renamed the school North Greenville Junior College a year later.

1972

It was renamed simply North Greenville College in 1972.

1991

In 1991, North Greenville College reaffirmed its basic commitment to quality education, applying to the Commission on Colleges of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools to offer bachelor’s degrees in Christian Studies and church music.

1992

The school was given candidacy status the following summer, with its initial cohort of upperclassmen enrolling in the fall semester of 1992.

2006

The college continued to grow and add new bachelor’s degree programs over the years, then earned status as a university in 2006.

NGU assumed university status in 2006 and began granting master's degrees as well.
