Pros of working at North Houston Pole Line

The high pay and benefits associated with union linework. The size and profitability of NHPL makes it more dependable than other smaller contractor competitors in the area

Constantly being exposed to new and changing work. Every day is something new. Makes for a well rounded hand.

Cons of working at North Houston Pole Line

Every foreman is job scared and willing to work their crew through lunch and whistle bite every day. Donating 30 minutes free labor. Every day you're going to work as hell. All day. Every day. From groundman to journeyman. Quanta service owned company. Quanta services owns a ton of companies across the country so if you burn your bridge with this deplorable company you could wind up shadow banned from a lot of companies in many states. That includes filing justified grievances with local union 66. Not to mention the CEO of NHPL has a lot of pull at that local. So you usually don't get very far going that route anyway. This is the only IBEW contractor I've ever heard of that doesn't supply bottled water. They have tanks of potable water and Gatorade coolers to get by the osha requirement of supplying water. They don't supply the tools outside of the union tool list needed to complete the job and everyone falls in line and supplies their own. Their main show up is frequently subject to theft and because everyone has to bring their own tools, it's the employee that bites the bullet. I know of several people that have had hundreds or thousands of dollars worth of tools stolen out of company trucks on company property and the company refuses to reimburse any costs. Note the CBA requires contractors to provide a safe place for tool storage. The company has become a haven for unsafe workers that can't make it anywhere else.

What do you like best about North Houston Pole Line's CEO and the leadership team?

I can't think of one positive thing to say about any of the management that I've come in contact with that wouldn't fall under the bare minimum standard. Which they frequently fall short of.

How would you improve North Houston Pole Line's culture?

I'm not sure where to start. The foreman are usually pretty competent. But they've all gotten to where they are by being terrified to not turn in enough work for the day. The pressure of getting as much work done as humanly possible every single day leads to worn out employees, and ill-maintaned equipment. Instead of being scared to pull up to the yard 5 minutes before quitting time, it'd be nice if the foreman were told to get their crew in the yard 15 or 30 minutes early to clean off trash and load material for the next day and still get off on time. Cleaning and loading material are done on employee time frequently.

How did you prepare for the North Houston Pole Line interview?

I was assigned this contractor by my apprenticeship. So I didn't directly interview with NHPL.

How does your compensation at North Houston Pole Line compare to the industry average?

For journeyman, the pay is decent for the area. For apprentices not so much. Most other contractors in the area pay apprentices per diem while NHPL does not.

What's the diversity at North Houston Pole Line like?

It's pretty diverse. Diverse ethnicities of males anyway.

What brings you the most joy at North Houston Pole Line?

Trouble work. Getting neighborhood's power back on after I know they've been out for a while is a pretty good feeling.
