Job Description
Performs two dimensional (2-D) ultrasonic recordings of internal organs for the diagnosis of disease and study of the malfunction of organs.
SUMMARY OF ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
Performs clinical assessment and diagnostic sonography examinations.
Perform invasive ultrasound procedures, doppler vascular examinations, deep abdominal studies and color-flow ultrasound as required
Selects appropriate equipment for use in ultrasound setup, following exam specifications.
Explains the test to the patient. Instructs and assists the patient in assuming the physical position for examination.
Uses two patient identifiers after performing any procedure.
Able to assess patient pain interfering with imaging procedure; makes appropriate physician contact for intervention.
Performs all aspects of patient care in an environment that optimizes patient safety and reduces the likelihood of medical/health care errors.
Selects a transducer and adjusts the equipment controls according to the organ to be examined, the depth of field and other specifications of test.
Enters test data and patient information into computer of ultrasound equip0ment to maintain record of test results.
Moves transducer by hand over specified area of the body and observes sound wave display screen to monitor quality of ultrasonic pattern produced.
Produces images of internal organs and records diagnostic data on magnetic tape, computer disk, strip printout or film.
Obtains permanent record of internal examination by photographing images of organs shown on the display module or removing the strip printout.
Evaluates technical quality of films to obtain representative images of pathogenic conditions, processes film in accordance with standard procedures or techniques.
Discusses test results with supervisor or attending physician.
Performs all quality control checks as prescribed.
Maintains records of ultrasound films taken, archiving and de-archiving data as required; calculates, compiles and records data from numerical readings on patient's medical record and related documents.
Understands and practices proper use of all equipment; never operates equipment inconsistent with manufacturer's instruction.
Calibrates, cleans and performs routine maintenance on equipment to ensure proper functioning; cleans and sterilizes instruments, supplies and equipment, stocks and replenishes supplies as needed.
Provides care appropriate to condition and age of the patient, including pediatric, geriatric and general population.

EDUCATION AND REGULATORY REQUIREMENTS
Successful completion of an approved one (1) year program in Ultrasound Technology.
Must be eligible for registry or registered by the American Registry of Diagnostic Medical Sonographers (ARDMS).
Must be eligible for registry or registered by the Cardiovascular Credentialing International (CCI.
One (1) year of imaging experience.
Certification in area of specialty.
Current BLS certification
Current compliance with Continuing Medical Education (CME) requirements for specialty(ies) as appropriate.

What you will do
Produces accurate and efficient clinical diagnostic images as directed by providers and/or radiologists according to established standards and protocols.
Initiates proper intervention to radiologist or referring provider when test indicates immediate attention.
Reviews appropriate indications for tests ordered and contacts provider for more information when needed, reporting inappropriate indications to leadership.
Provides test data in a complete and accurate format for presentation to the reading radiologist for interpretation. Makes hard copy images as directed.
Maintains established department policies, procedures, objectives, quality assessment, safety, and environment and infection control.
Assists with staff/student on-the-job training and orientation.
Assists with analysis, collection and maintenance of records as required by department manager, Quality Improvement, Joint Commission, MDH, ACR standards, OSHA guidelines or as may be required by the facility or law.
Assists medical records reconciliation of signed orders to performed exams through daily QC.

Registry preferred within two years after hiring.

Job Summary

Responsibilities
1. Operates ultrasound equipment used to produce general diagnostic scans to ensure optimal patient care. Determines equipment and supply needs in advance for general diagnostic scans, ensuring patient safety and scan efficiency.
2. May participate in complex scans and invasive procedures in order to meet vascular credential requirements and career development activities.
3. Evaluates and verifies images meet departmental quality standards and established imaging protocols. Follows department protocols for image acquisition, labeling, documentation, and image presentation in PACS.
4. Identifies and distinguishes between normal and abnormal anatomy relevant to imaging sub-specialty and documents in images and electronic health record per protocol.
5.Maintains required quality standards through use of Peer View and other department metrics reported on a regular basis. Participates in image review and feedback sessions with physicians, senior sonographers, and supervisor.
6. Observes patients during scan to ensure their safety and well being. Able to assess and respond to urgent and emergent patient events and demonstrates ability to obtain appropriate level of emergency assistance.
7. Ensures the accuracy of all data entered into the patient record such as arrival, begin and end exam information. Completes other computerized data entry and charging tasks with correct data to ensure the accuracy of patient records and charges.
8. May access and handle selected medications and contrast media within scope of practice and with supervision and guidance of a Sr. sonographer and/or provider.
9. Maintains and performs basic troubleshooting of ultrasound equipment and informs supervisor and submits tickets as needed to ensure equipment is operable and safe. Ensures broken equipment is taken out of service.
10. Inspects, cleans, and prepares exam rooms after each patient to ensure the efficiency of patient flow within the area. Follows infection prevention practices and completes any logs or documentation as required. Participates in Environment of Care (EOC) rounds and inspection readiness activities.
11. Actively participates in training of sonography students on clinical rotation in department.
12.Maintains positive working relationships using Parkland Colleague Behavior guidelines. Serves as a resource person for physicians, other sonographers, students, and patients to ensure an efficient flow of patient information and care.
13. Assists in the department orientation and on boarding of new sonographers, APP staff, support staff and/or resident physicians.
