In September 1972, North Valley Bank was established as a California-chartered bank.
The first branch was a mobile facility which opened on March 11, 1975 at the current Chico Pillsbury branch site.
The acquisition of the Bank of Wayne in 1976 created a need for a new identity, and the name Valley National Bank was chosen.
In 1980, North Valley Bancorp was incorporated as the holding company for North Valley Bank.
In 2000, the company acquired Six Rivers National Bank.
In September 2004, the company acquired Yolo Community Bank for $23 million.
In 2007, Sterling Financial Corporation agreed to acquire the company for $196 million in cash and stock, but the merger was cancelled after failing to win regulatory approval.
In October 2014, the company was acquired by Tri Counties Bank for $178.4 million in stock.
Tri Counties Bank ended 2016 with total assets of $4.5 billion.
When the COVID-19 pandemic occurred in the spring of 2020, the Small Business Administration (SBA) Paycheck Protection Program (PPP) was created to help small businesses keep workers employed.
In January 2021, the Paycheck Protection Program (PPP) reopened with a second round of funding aimed to help small businesses that remained financially impacted by the pandemic.
