Eagle Newspapers company history timeline

1948

He sold it in 1948 and, with the proceeds, purchased the Blue Mountain Eagle, moving his family to John Day, where he began his public service career as mayor—he went on to serve in the Oregon State Senate and as governor.

Founded in 1948 by Elmo Smith, the company publishes two daily papers, six semi-weekly papers, six weekly papers, two weekly classified publications, and six specialty publications.

1961

The business inched its way west of its Eastern Oregon roots in 1961 when the Hood River News was added.

1970

Since our beginning in 1970, Eagle Web Press has been dedicated to supplying you, our customer, with excellent service and superior quality at affordable prices.

1984

The company welcomed its first daily in 1984, when Eagle’s weekly in Sunnyside, Wash., was merged with the Daily News.

2005

The Oklahoma History Center opened in 2005, and operates in Oklahoma City.

2013

The final phase of that transaction was completed in July, 2013, when Oregon Publications Corporation purchased the Central Oregonian and Central Oregon Press, located in Prineville, Oregon.

In 2013, Eagle Newspapers sold six Oregon newspapers in Central Oregon and the Willamette Valley to the Pamplin Media Group.
