The Director's Office Directorate has an opening for an experienced AI Policy Analyst to develop and implement strategies in building out our Institutional Policy Performance oversight capabilities, with a specific focus on leveraging Artificial Intelligence (AI) to streamline and consolidate institutional documents and support regulatory compliance. As part of the Institutional Policy Office, the successful candidate will be responsible for monitoring the Policy Management System to ensure that our programs are performing as intended in alignment with the Laboratory's mission. Essential Duties
- Serve as the primary contact on policy and requirements flow down as part of the Laboratory's overall approach to governance, risk management, and compliance (GRC).
- Develop and implement strategies for addressing process improvements.
- Leverage AI to systematically analyze, compare, and integrate multiple related policies into single, comprehensive policy documents.
- Use AI tools to identify duplicative language, eliminate redundancies, resolve conflicts, and ensure consistency across institutional policies.
- Apply AI for institutional regulatory compliance review and requirement flow-down, ensuring consolidated policies meet all relevant external and internal requirements.
- Use lean, design, & systems thinking, learning organization constructs, agile principles, and other problem-solving methods to streamline institutional policies and procedures management.
- Assess and design strategies for policies flow-down to ensure vertical and horizontal integration of high-level documents to improve governance effectiveness.
- Plan, coordinate, and conduct user acceptance testing of policy and requirements management GRC systems and tools.
- Communicate vision and share with management and functional subject matter experts on how to write, manage, and trace requirements derived from the Prime Contract, external drivers (e.g., the Code of Federal Regulations, DOE orders).
- Conduct quality reviews to compare the Laboratory's policies and processes to various regulatory, contractual, and internal legal requirements.
- Create and distribute policy-related reports due to changes in laws, rules, and regulations to assist management with policy-related decisions. Create comprehensive statistical models, goals and metrics.
- Conduct role-based trainings, share information, and perform assessments to assist those in policy and requirements management roles and serve as a mentor for those performing policy management roles throughout the Laboratory.
- Recommend new IT systems and functional improvements to existing IT systems to Information Technology Partners to continuously improve policy and requirements management systems and processes.
- Conduct benchmarking activities across and outside the DOE complex and apply learnings to improve the effectiveness and efficiency of the Laboratory's policy and requirements management systems.
- Provide strategic guidance and tactical plans for the implementation of improvement initiatives, requiring coordination and communication with senior executive management and external entities.
- Serve as a project facilitator on significant and highly visible improvement initiatives, programs, and projects.

Essential Skills, Knowledge, and Abilities
- Ability to secure and maintain a U.S. DOE Q-level security clearance which requires U.S. citizenship.
- Bachelor's degree in relevant discipline, or the equivalent combination of education and significant related experience.
- Significant experience as a business analyst, designing and implementing improvements and experience using project management methodologies, practices, tools and techniques.
- Experience with managing key Quality Management System processes (e.g., Document Control, Change Management).

The successful candidate will have a strong background in operating and maintaining NIF facility support systems and technical equipment. NIF is a 24/7 operational facility, and operators typically work on a 3/12-4/12 schedule to support operations, with the last two hours of each shift being overtime. The giant laser has nearly 40,000 optics, which precisely guide, reflect, amplify, and focus 192 laser beams onto a fusion target about the size of a pencil eraser.
The NIF&PS Directorate has an opening for an Engineering Technician V. The NIF laser is the world's most powerful laser system, capable of producing over 2 MJ of optical energy. The successful candidate will operate the Power Conditioning System (PCS) and the Plasma-Electrode Pockels Cell (PEPC) systems through the high-level computer control system following detailed procedures. The PCS employs one hundred ninety-two high voltage (24 KV), high-energy (1.7 MJ per module) capacitor bank modules used to power the large flash lamps in the NIF solid-state laser amplifiers. The PEPC system employs high voltage electronics and sophisticated controls hardware and software to implement an optical switch topology for the 192 beams of the NIF main laser. These systems include: high voltage power supplies, pulsed power hardware and circuits, analog, and digital controls hardware and software, embedded computers and diagnostics. The successful candidate will be expected to operate both systems remotely using Graphical User Interfaces (GUIs) and perform site maintenance including electrical distribution, high voltage -equipment, digital circuits analog circuits, vacuum controls, compressed air controls and/or major system configurations across multiple engineering disciplines. Primary interactions will be with the lead operators, shot directors, system managers and electrical engineering support personnel.

This position supports the National Ignition Facility (NIF) which is the world's largest and most energetic laser facility ever built. NIF is also the most precise and reproducible laser as well as the largest optical instrument. The giant laser has nearly 40,000 optics, which precisely guide, reflect, amplify, and focus 192 laser beams onto a fusion target about the size of a pencil eraser.
The National Ignition Facility (NIF) is seeking a talented and self-motivated Engineering Technician to perform installation and removal of diagnostic hardware that supports critical NIF experiments. The primary responsibilities include installing complex diagnostic hardware of assorted sizes per procedure, installing/removing large optics up to 70 lbs., performing quality assurance inspections, and creating and uploading files to computer databases. Secondary responsibilities include hoisting and rigging large loads, troubleshooting both mechanical and electrical assemblies, and working on/around X-ray sources. This requires a versatile, broad-based Engineering Technician capable of supporting the installation and commissioning of complex hardware which involves configuration, setup and maintenance of mechanical and vacuum subsystems in support of “Shot Operations” in a large complex, tightly secured facility. The successful candidate will also record data, identify process improvements, and will have to work with hazardous materials in a radioactive environment. The Engineering Technician will also have the communication skills to effectively interact with scientists, technicians, designers and engineers and will report to the NIF Target Area Operations Supervisor.
Due to the vast and varying types of experiments, NIF is a 24/7 operational facility. This position requires operators to work on a 3/12-4/12 shift schedule to support operations, with the last two hours of each shift being overtime. The day shift work hours are from 06:30-19:30 and the owl shift hours are from 18:30-07:30. Day shifts work either Sunday-Tuesday and every other Wednesday or Thursday to Saturday and every other Wednesday. Owl shifts work either Sunday to Tuesday and every other Saturday or Wednesday to Friday and every other Saturday night. The successful candidate will be required to pass various on-site training modules to pursue work assignments. The successful candidate will be required to obtain a Q-Level Security Clearance through the Department of Energy.
Essential Duties
- Provide mechanical support for the assembly, installation, operation, repair and maintenance of NIF mechanical systems in accordance with approved procedures.
