Inside eight rented classrooms of the Whittier School on Vermont Avenue in Blue Island (a remote pastoral setting 16 miles south of Chicago), 62 hopeful students gathered together on the first day of class, September 2, 1867, to commence a rigorous course of study.
In July 1909, the Board of Education moved quickly to appoint Young to head the Chicago Board of Education, marking the first time a woman occupied the post of Superintendent of Education in Chicago, or for that matter in any other United States metropolis.
In 1949, Chicago Teachers College (CTC) established the Chicago Teachers College (North Side) branch.
Beginning in 1950, CTC opened the first of several satellite extensions in various North Side schools for the ease and convenience of enrolled students living north of Madison Street.
Its main campus, located at 5500 North St Louis Avenue, opened in 1961 and was then called, Chicago Teachers College North.
The Carruthers Center for Inner City Studies was established in 1966 as an important expression of the University’s commitment to inner city communities and especially to the African American community.
In March 1969, with the support of students, faculty and administration, Northeastern opened ¡Aqui Estoy!, a storefront operation serving the Hispanic community of West Town and Humboldt Park.
Three years later, in 1969, the University’s El Centro location was founded with a special focus on service to the large, diverse and growing Latino community.
By 1972, funds for this program ran out and the program was suspended.
To complete the picture, this mix of essentially urban locations and partnerships also includes the Gensburg-Markham Prairie, which the University acquired in 1973.
In 1973, a new director, Miguel Velasquez, was hired to revive and expand the services of the previous program.
In 1978, the University opened the Chicago Teachers’ Center to offer professional development programs for urban teachers and administrators.
In January 1996, Northeastern Illinois University established its own Board of Trustees.
Most recently, Northeastern joined the University Center of Lake County in 1996 as a founding member of a consortium of public and private universities offering college-level course work in Lake County.
Since 1997, United States News and World Report has consistently ranked Northeastern as one of the most diverse Midwestern universities.

In 2002, Northeastern partnered with ASPIRA Inc. of Illinois to help inner city high school students graduate from high school and prepare them for college life and beyond.

The last construction project completed in 2004 provided an opportunity to increase our course offerings, including the general education program of the University.
Recipient of a number of prestigious awards and fellowships, he taught world and Middle Eastern history at Santa Barbara City College and California State Fullerton before joining NEIU’s History faculty in 2010.
Best Investment: Newsweek (2012) recognized Northeastern as the sixth best investment in college degree programs nationwide and the best investment in Illinois.
In September 2016, Northeastern first began to offer on-campus housing for its students.
He was a consultant on one of the inaugural exhibits of the National Museum of African American History and Culture, which opened in 2016.
