Emergency veterinary technician job at Northern Arizona Healthcare Corporation
The Patient Care Technician (PCT) Clinic, under the supervision of the Practice Supervisor or Manager, nurse, therapist, lead or Director, is responsible for assisting in patient care, documentation and supply management in the clinic or outpatient department. S/he may collaborate with the Medical Assistant to support the provider(s) in providing patient care.
The PCT Clinic will also work to keep the unit supplied, clean, and organized. The PCT Clinic may function in an office assistant role within the clinic and/or department and answers the telephone, answers questions within their capabilities the patient or their support individuals may have. S/he follows all policies and procedures of Northern Arizona Healthcare. They perform or assist with procedures that fall within the scope of practice of a PCT in addition to office assistant duties. The PCT Clinic may be caring for infants, children, adolescents, adults and geriatrics populations.
Responsibilities
Patient Care
* Escorts patients from waiting area to exam room; communicates information regarding any extended wait or delay in appointment time. Assists in transporting patients, equipment and supplies.
* Assists with transfer of patient with restrictions in weight bearing or impairment of motor status.
* Takes vital signs and basic historical patient data.
* Prepares patients for examinations, assists with examinations, cast or splint applications, minor procedures, and a variety of other medically related tasks within the scope of knowledge.
* Instructs patients on urine collection procedures.
* Maintains department cleanliness including following procedures for clean up after treatments.
* Maintains equipment and supplies inventories.
* Follows guidelines for safety with regard to contact precautions and all policies/procedures dealing with blood borne pathogens.
* Adheres to regulatory and organizational standards affecting patient care and safety as well as all NAH and departmental policies and procedures. Practices in a safe and cost-effective manner.
* Assists patients with donning/doffing compression garments as needed.
* Assists with dressing removal as assigned by supervising clinician.
Entire Care/Wound Care Clinic/Departments
* Observes patient for skin integrity and reports and problem areas to supervising clinicians.
* Assists patients with activities of daily living such as toileting as needed.
* Assists patients with mobility under the direction of supervising clinician, including but not limited to therapeutic exercises.
Administrative
* Answers, evaluates and prioritizes incoming administrative line telephone calls, communicates effectively with callers obtaining complete and accurate information to determine the need(s) of the caller.
* Demonstrates accuracy of documentation of assessments, interventions and patient responses as evidenced by the appropriate documentation systems.
* Maintains department documents.
* Maintains charts and copies charts as requested.
Education
* Demonstrates understanding of the Department's Standards of Care and Practice and Administrative Policies as well as being able to locate Policy and Procedures manual in the assigned department.
* Demonstrates and utilizes the guidelines of care and practice via the nursing process and in accordance with Arizona State Board of Nursing Laws and Regulations being able to perform at a fully competent level.
* Focuses on personal development areas, engaging in professional/collegial interactions with peers and students.
Compliance/Safety
* Responsible for reporting any safety related incident in a timely fashion through the Midas/RDE tool; attends all safety related training programs; performs work in a safe manner; monitors work environment for possible safety issues and ensures others are also performing work in a safe manner.
* Stays current and complies with state and federal regulations/statutes and company policies that impact the employees area of responsibility.
* If required for position, ensures all certifications and/or licenses are up-to-date and valid prior to expiration dates.
* Completes all company mandatory modules and required job specific training in the specified time frame.

Under direct supervision of a Veterinarian, the Certified Veterinary Technician may: suture to close existing surgical skin incisions and skin lacerations, induce anesthesia, administer rabies vaccine, extract loose teeth or dental fragments in dogs and cats only and euthanasia.

Administer Medications - give patients accurate dosage of prescribed medications, anesthesia, vaccines, or other medications indicated by the DVM
Client Communication - obtain medical information from the clients and provide the client proper instruction on how to care for the animal under the veterinarian's plan of care
Assist the Client Service Specialist team when needed

Certified Veterinary Technician (CVT) in Arizona,

Job Purpose: The purpose of the Veterinary Technician Assistant is to provide high quality medical support and nursing care to companion animal patients. 1. Telephone Triage and Client Relations

3. Pharmacy and Pharmacology
Recognize general types and groups of drugs and use proper terminology.
Differentiate prescription drugs from over-the-counter drugs and describe proper prescription label requirements.
Label and package dispensed drugs correctly.
Restocking of supplies and checking expiration dates.
4. Animal Nursing
Demonstrate basic knowledge of normal and abnormal animal behavior.
Utilize patient and personnel safety measures.
Identify potential Zoonotic diseases.
Describe and follow proper isolation procedures.
Be familiar with OSHA standards.
Determine and record TPR.
Provide routine record-keeping and observation of hospitalized patients.
Demonstrate a basic understanding of common diseases and medical conditions.
Monitor/restrain patients for fluid therapy and record observations.
Administer oral tablets and capsules (dog, cat).
Perform therapeutic bathing and basic grooming.

Assist with preparation of patients using aseptic technique.
Aid with physical monitoring of recovering surgical patients.
Perform post-surgical clean up.
Fold surgical gowns and drapes.
7. Assistance in the laboratory
Collect voided urine samples.
Assist in the collection of blood samples for procedures.

8. Aftercare
Be familiar with the euthanasia process and post mortem care.
Make memorial paw prints and prepare pets for cremation.
9. Radiology
