The company's first brick and mortar store was opened in Burnsville, Minnesota in 1981.
He originally worked in heavy equipment sales at Ziegler, but left when the business began slumping during the 1981-82 recession.
The company also mailed its first catalog in 1981.
By 1985 Northern Tool occupied a 60,000 sq. ft. space in Burnsville, Minnesota, for warehousing, assembly and offices; and opened a second warehouse and showroom in Charlotte, North Carolina.
In 1989 Northern Tool employees drove truckloads of generators and hot water pressure washers to Prince William Sound, Alaska, to help clean up the Exxon Valdez oil spill.
Northern Tool began its own manufacturing business in 1991 with the launch of its NorthStar brand.
Forty years later that company, renamed Northern Tool + Equipment in 1998, is a multi-channel business with 120 retail stores nationwide, three distribution centers, domestic and foreign manufacturing facilities and a can-do culture.
The company launched its website, northerntool.com in 1999.
The company launched a website and mail order catalogue in 2008 called Kotula's, named after the founder.
As of January 2021, Northern Tool opens its 120th retail location in Humble , TX. with stores now in 22 states.
