Northland College company history timeline

1906

Founded in 1906, Northland College is an institution with a "distinctive environmental mission," offering a wide range of environmentally-based degrees.

Northland College was established in 1906 at Ashland, Wisconsin.

1949

Northland Community & Technical College has been in existence in one form or other since 1949, when the Minnesota State Board of Education approved an area vocational school in Thief River Falls.

1965

1965 - Thief River Falls State Junior College was established and housed at Lincoln High School.

1971

Due to his commitment and contributions to environmentalism and the preservation and protection of natural lands, Northland College established the Sigurd Olson Environmental Institute on August 27, 1971 at the first environmental conference held by the college.

The college still has ties within the Congregational Church, now known as United Church of Christ (UCC). In 1971, Northland College began to take on a sustainability emphasis, deviated from the average 4-year liberal arts institution it was previously.

1972

The institute officially opened in 1972, and continues to serve the Chequamegon Bay community.

1975

The present facility opened in April 1975.

1992

1992 - The name was changed to Northwest Technical College and consolidated with five area technical colleges.

1995

One of the most prominent changes occurred in July of 1995 when the two colleges merged to create Northland Community and Technical College.

1995 - The two schools were merged to form Northland Community & Technical College (NCTC).

1997

In 1997, Northland College joined other educational institutions worldwide and signed the Talloires Declaration, a mandate of principle that guides campuses to be environmentally responsible places to live, work, and learn.

2000

2000 - Northwest Technical College received a ten-year accreditation from North Central Association of Colleges and Schools.

2003

In July of 2003, Northland Community and Technical College in Thief River Falls merged with the East Grand Forks campus of Northwest Technical College, to become a two campus comprehensive college.

2017

In 2017, The Mary Griggs Burke Center collaborated with various Great Lakes fisheries scientists to look into how coastal wetlands help fisheries in the Great Lakes.

2022

A Conversation with Aja Gregg: Northland’s 2022 Commencement Speaker Each year, a graduating senior is selected to serve as the student speaker at commencement.
