Pros of working at Northrop Grumman

Talented staff, decent job security and benefits. Many of my coworkers are working on side projects, which can be submitted for internal funding or patent filing in exchange for a cash prize. The pay is good for my area, and you get to work on really cool and massively complex systems. Most employees I have encountered hold themselves to a high standard, are collaborative and knowledgeable, and motivated to have the team succeed. Although there seems to be a clear hierarchy and politics that come along with every big organization, I found that people generally expect you to contribute, and value your input even as a newer or less experienced employee. There's a bit of a sink or swim mentality, which I respect, but others might find intimidating. Leadership seems to be really investing efforts into making sure everyone is happy with their role, and retaining employees, even if that means transferring groups.

Cons of working at Northrop Grumman

The IT systems are absolute trash! Our enterprise network is a jumbled mismatch of disassociated sites and DIY ventures from various software teams. No wifi at my office, despite being a 'wifi capable' facility - workaround is to create a guest account that must be re-provisioned weekly, and the wifi blocks access to most things other than email (Good luck trying to use Spotify!). You can join a coffee club, but don't expect the company to provide such luxuries. In the grand scheme of things - it's lacking the bells and whistles. On the program side, I have ran into difficulty finding information on a lot of their systems. There are so many different document repositories and data bases for projects that have spanned upwards of 2 decades, that the general lack of information organization becomes frustrating quite quickly.

Northrop Grumman benefits

9-80 Schedule, Holiday Shutdown (at the expense of other less-significant holidays), Bi-weekly pay structure, and good compensation.

Pros of working at Northrop Grumman

Good pay and benefits. Most people were very professional and nice to the underlings.

Cons of working at Northrop Grumman

The people who were not professional nor nice to the underlings had no business working there. They were "transplants" from California and treated people badly.

Northrop Grumman benefits

If you had a good boss, you were happy to go to work. Benefits were great.

What do you like best about Northrop Grumman's CEO and the leadership team?

It was a big company. The CEO was great until he moved on to the Pentagon. The person who took his role was not as good but he was just learning. Filling the previous CEO's shoes was tough

How would you improve Northrop Grumman's culture?

Treat people respectfully and weed out the bad, just like the government. Treat women fairly. Extend maternity leave for longer than 6 weeks. Have a nursery in the building where nursing mothers could nurse their babies. And fathers could spend time with their babies too. Give the underlings a voice so their opinion matters. Some great ideas have come from them that were never recognized.

How did you prepare for the Northrop Grumman interview?

Dressed appropriately, researched information on the company so I knew what their purpose was so I could converse with the interviewer about it. Researched competitive salaries in the industry.

How does your compensation at Northrop Grumman compare to the industry average?

In my hiring days, we were given full salaries with full benefits. Before I left the company, new hires were given higher salaries but no benefits. It was a tough decision for new hires on whether or not to accept a position there. I don't know if the influx of new hires survived or if they had to start giving benefits again in order to attract personnel.

What's the diversity at Northrop Grumman like?

We had all kinds of personnel from all over the world. That was our business structure and our customer base.

What brings you the most joy at Northrop Grumman?

Accomplishing my tasks and getting praise for my work.

Pros of working at Northrop Grumman

This is an established company that offers financial stability, benefits, an ethics office for help/grievances, a 9/80 work schedule, and other features typical to a very large corporation in the aerospace and defense industry.

Cons of working at Northrop Grumman

As is typical of an aerospace and defense corporation, there is not much cultural diversity within the company. Non-U.S. citizens are prohibited from entering a lot of the facilities, and for the most part cannot work there. Some job positions frown on even knowing a non-U.S. citizen, and may discourage foreign travel.

Northrop Grumman benefits

The salary.

Cons of working at Northrop Grumman

Depending upon your position, work life balance is hard to achieve. I find it hard to take vacation when I need it. Even when I am sick, I find myself working from home. No such thing as a full day off anymore. Benefits are mediocre at best.

They try very hard to make it a nice place to work. The flex schedule program is a great start.

Cons of working at Northrop Grumman

They don't fire employees. They stone wall them from any promotions or significate raises until they are forces to look for work elsewhere.
